In 2003, Liz headed off to Greenville College to pursue a bachelor of arts in piano performance and to form a band. In January 2004, she helped form the alternative/goth band Nova Child and fronted the band as the lead singer. Within a few months, Nova Child was somewhat successful after landing a slot on the main stage at Agape Music Festival, but only lasted another year or so due to lack of members and interest. From 2005-2006, she fronted the new wave band The Madison Darlings, but things fell through quickly for various reasons. No longer having a band to work with, Liz began to create her own music, and the project "Ghhrfy" was formed.
At 21 years old, Liz is now in her senior year in Greenville College. She will be performing in her second full length piano recital on November 18th (including the entire work of "Carnaval" by Robert Schumann), and is looking forward to recording and releasing her first full length album by Spring 2007.
Air
Ghhrfy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Calling softly in the air
But who is listening to air?
Human hearts crash down, so torn
Hands high, hopes lift in the air
But who will listen to air?
Some will stay
So stay with me,
Stay with me
Angels watch from peaceful skies
Our cries drifting through the air
But who is listening to air?
Oh Lord, what have I done?
Only love brings us home
In these lyrics to Ghhrfy's song Air, the artist seems to be contemplating our relationship with the intangible and invincible force that surrounds us all. The first two lines encourage us to blindly follow something safe and sure, but then calls to question who is really paying attention to the air around us. The imagery of human hearts 'crashing down, so torn', and the use of repetition in the question 'But who will listen to air?' suggest a sense of despair or hopelessness at the idea of our cries for help or comfort falling on deaf ears.
Yet, the artist offers hope in the chorus, by urging us to 'stay with me', and acknowledging the presence of angels looking out for us from peaceful skies above. The final lines, addressed to the Lord, express a sense of regret or guilt at something that has been done, while ultimately recognizing that only love can bring us home. Overall, Ghhrfy seems to be exploring the themes of human vulnerability, the search for meaning and connection, and the hope that love and support can offer in dark times.
