What A Wonderful World
Ghoul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see towers of flame, and corpses too
I see the doom, of me and you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies obscured, I see no light
Dark freezing days, dark sleepless nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.
The clouds of radiation are so pretty in the sky
Tumours on the faces of the people who survived
I see friends in the past kill each other for food
They're really starving......So will you.

I see babies die, I watch them decompose

They'll hurt much more, than I'll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ghoul's What A Wonderful World presents a stark contrast to the original version of the song made famous by Louis Armstrong. Instead of describing the beauty of the world, Ghoul paints a picture of a post-apocalyptic world full of despair, death, and destruction. The lyrics describe the horrific aftermath of a nuclear war, with imagery of towers of flames, corpses, doom, skies obscured by radiation clouds, and dark freezing nights. Despite the bleakness of the situation, the singer still finds themselves thinking that it is a wonderful world. This can be seen as a bitter irony, or an acceptance of the horrors that they are experiencing as part of the cycle of life and death.

The lyrics also touch on the suffering of people who survived the war. They have tumors on their faces and are starving. Friends are killing each other for food, highlighting the collapse of society and the importance of basic needs in a time of crisis. The mention of babies dying and decomposing shows the harsh reality of the world, which is seen by the singer as both terrible and beautiful in its own way. The song serves as a lament for the lost world, while also acknowledging the resilience of humanity in the face of adversity.
