Center of the Universe
Giant Sand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Poor little universe
Has stubbed its thing
What fell out was
A human being

I knew a little universe
That didn't mean a thing
'Til he stubbed himself
Another being

Welcome to the center of the universe
You could do way worse
Poor little tiny, little bit of universe
Has caught a cough

Spitting it out all over the place
Little dabs of the human race
Poor little dab
Right here at the center of you

Man I never needed to go
To Epcot center
Happy as a clam living in
The epicenter

Never owned a house or a car
I'm just a renter

Met my love at the prevention center
You welcome to the center of you

Overall Meaning

The song "Center of the Universe" by Giant Sand is a reflection on the human experience and our place in the world. The first lines of the song present the idea that the universe made a mistake by creating human beings. The use of the word "thing" to describe the universe in the first line highlights the insignificance of the human race in comparison to the vastness of the universe. The second verse presents a contradiction to this idea by suggesting that the universe was incomplete until the creation of human beings. The line "I knew a little universe that didn't mean a thing" implies that the universe was meaningless until the creation of humanity. This perspective highlights the importance we attribute to ourselves and our existence.

The chorus, "Welcome to the center of the universe, you could do way worse" suggests that, despite our smallness, we have the potential to create something significant. The line, "Poor little tiny, little bit of universe has caught a cough" refers to the vulnerability of humanity, despite our perceived importance. The cough symbolizes human frailty, and the idea that we are subject to illness and other human conditions.

Overall, the song invites the listener to reflect on our place in the universe and to recognize both our insignificance and our potential for greatness.

Got home and opened the Parker case to hear what I got - What? That's not right! LOL guess what was actually inside? THIS! HA! Never heard it before. Love it instantly. wot a great line! ''Instead of something we'd hide against
It felt good to feel our love in the past tense
It was then when love turned from
Wonder and lust to just sin'' :)
