Cursed
Gideon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cursed!

Just call me misery
Call me bad news
I'll bring you nothing but pain
Dragging this ball and chain
I was blessed with a curse
The devil knows me by name

You can run, hide
If it gives you peace of mind
Don't slip up
The worst is yet to come
Blame it on the bad luck baby
Stay away from me
(Stay away from me)
Got me feeling like a black cat lately
I'll bring you to your knees
Cursed!

I'm starting to break from bending
A losing streak that's never ending
Weed out the weak
I was washed in the pain
Redeemed by suffering

Everything around me falls apart
Is this punishment or just a test of heart
Or did Lady Luck just give up
And turn her back on me

You can run, hide
If it gives you peace of mind
Don't slip up
The worst is yet to come
Blame it on the bad luck baby
Stay away from me
(Stay away from me)
Got me feeling like a black cat lately
I'll bring you to your knees
(So just) Blame it on the bad luck baby
Stay away from me
(Stay away from me)

Got me feeling like a black cat lately
I'll bring you to your knees

Overall Meaning

In Gideon's song "Cursed!", the singer reflects on the notion that they were cursed from birth. They refer to themselves as "misery" and "bad news" that brings pain and suffering to those around them. Despite this, they suggest that they were blessed with the curse and the devil knows them by name. Throughout the song, the singer struggles with the idea that they are the cause of all the misfortune in their life and those around them. They question whether their constant losing and suffering is a punishment or a test of heart. They even wonder if Lady Luck has abandoned them altogether.

Despite the darkness of the lyrics, the song is ultimately about redemption through suffering. The singer suggests that they were "redeemed by suffering" and that they will "weed out the weak" that cannot handle the curse. The song is a warning to others to stay away from the singer as they feel like a "black cat lately" and will bring anyone who comes too close to their knees.

The thing I like about Gideon having guest spots is that, sometimes (sometimes it works well) the vocal delivery can be very one dimensional.
One of the reasons I prefer metalcore vs hardcore is most hardcore bands stick to a single vocalist and a single delivery.
So Currents or Erra (both metalcore bands), in example, have a screamer with a much more expansive range.
That and it takes the focus off the straightforward nature of the song where one riff drives the song, versus an opening riff, a closing riff and variations throughout.
It's tough to craft longer hardcore songs or having hardcore songs that are 3+ minutes long that are interesting with one primary riff.
Which is why most hardcore songs are in that 2:15-2:45 range.
The plus side is that those guest spots feel more important when they're only 20-30 seconds long, and a vocalist can push himself harder if it isn't sustained for 4 minutes of the similar verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure.
Personally, for Gideon, I'd love to see them pull the inverse structure.
So the same verse, but with different worded choruses.
They've done it once or twice and it really helps the storytelling aspect that is present in a lot of their songwriting.
