Once In A While

I pressed my cheek to the cool tabletop
And wished the dance playing down my spine would stop
The moon was hanging there in the window blue
And once in a while I wish that it was true
Once in a while a little bit of broken heart could do
I took a long drink tasting of tin
And swallowed every conversation again
A distant car horn was trying to break through
And once in a while I wish that it was true
Once in a while I wish that it was true
Once in a while a little bit of broken heart could do
But like the rain it's gonna soak you through
Past the skin and the bone
To the flight and the flown
Soaking everything you own
And once in a while I wish that it was true
Once in a while I wish that it was you
Once in a while a little bit of broken heart could do
The song "Once In A While" by Gigolo Aunts describes the feeling of heartbreak and the longing for something that may not be true. The lyrics paint a picture of someone sitting alone, pressing their cheek to a tabletop, feeling the physical pain of the memories and the love lost. The metaphor of the moon hanging in the window blue is powerful, as it represents a distant and unattainable object. The repetition of "once in a while" reflects the cyclical nature of heartbreak, how it comes and goes in waves.
The song continues to describe the heartbroken person taking a long drink, the taste of metal perhaps representing the bitterness and hurt of the situation. They swallow every conversation again, meaning they are replaying in their mind all the conversations they had with the person who broke their heart. The sound of a distant car horn represents the outside world trying to break through, yet the heartbroken person is lost in their own pain.
The rain metaphor is striking, as it represents the tears that the person is shedding. It will soak through everything they own, like the heartbreak has soaked through their emotional being. The repetition of once in a while, followed by the desire for a little bit of a broken heart to do, demonstrates how the heartbroken person may want to feel some pain to be able to move on.
Overall, the song "Once In A While" captures the essence of heartbreak and the longing for something that may not be true. It showcases the cyclical nature of heartbreak, the bitterness and hurt that come with it, and the desire to move on.
