Natalie
Gilbert Bécaud Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nathalie
La place Rouge était vide
Devant moi marchait Nathalie
Il avait un joli nom, mon guide
Nathalie
La place Rouge était blanche
La neige faisait un tapis
Et je suivais par ce froid dimanche
Nathalie
Nathalie, Nathalie
Dans sa chambre à l'université
Une bande d'étudiants
L'attendait impatiemment
On a ri, on a beaucoup parlé
Ils voulaient tout savoir
Nathalie traduisait
Moscou, les plaines d'Ukraine
Et les Champs-Élysées
On a tout melangé
Et l'on a chanté
Et puis ils ont débouché
En riant à l'avance
Du champagne de France
Et l'on a dansé
Et quand la chambre fut vide
Tout les amis etaient partis
Je suis resté seul avec mon guide
Nathalie

Nathalie, Nathalie

Overall Meaning

The song Nathalie by Gilbert Bécaud tells the story of a man's encounter with a woman named Nathalie in Moscow's Red Square. As he walks through the square on a cold Sunday, he is struck by Nathalie's beauty and is drawn to her. She becomes his guide, leading him through the city and talking to him about the October Revolution. They eventually end up in her university dorm room, where a group of students are waiting for her, eager to hear about her experiences as a translator. They drink champagne, sing songs, and dance.

As the night wears on, the man realizes that he has fallen in love with Nathalie. He knows that he will miss her terribly when he returns to Paris, but he also knows that he will always cherish the memories of their time together. The final lines of the song suggest that he will one day return to Moscow, this time as Nathalie's guide.

"Nathalie"

Der Rote Platz war leer
Vor mir ging Nathalie
Er hatte einen schönen Namen, mein Reiseführer.
Nathalie
Der rote Platz war weiß
Der Schnee machte einen Teppich
Und ich folgte in dieser Kälte, Sonntag.
Nathalie
Sie sprach in nüchternen Sätzen
Von der Oktoberrevolution
Ich dachte schon
Dass nach Lenins Grabmal
Wir würden ins Café Puschkin gehen
Eine Schokolade zu trinken
Der Rote Platz war leer
Ich nahm ihren Arm, sie lächelte.
Er hatte blondes Haar, mein Reiseführer.
Nathalie, Nathalie
In ihrem Zimmer an der Universität
Eine Gruppe von Studenten
Wartete ungeduldig auf sie
Wir lachten und redeten viel
Sie wollten alles wissen
Nathalie übersetzte
Moskau, die Ebenen der Ukraine
Und die Champs-Élysées
Wir mischten alles zusammen
Und man sang
Und dann entkorkten sie
Im Voraus lachend
Champagner aus Frankreich
Und man tanzte
Und als das Zimmer leer war
Alle Freunde waren gegangen
Ich blieb allein mit meinem Reiseleiter zurück.
Nathalie

Natalie
La plaza roja desierta,

delante de mí Natalie;

tenía un lindo nombre mi guía,

Natalie.

 La plaza roja muy blanca,

la nieve formaba un tapiz.

Y yo seguía aquel frío domingo

a Natalie.

 Hablaba en francés muy sobrio,

de la Revolución de Octubre.

Y yo pensaba ya,

que de la tumba de Lenín,

iríamos al café Pushkín

a tomar un chocolate.

 La plaza roja desierta;

le tomé un brazo y sonrió;

rubio era el cabello de mi guía,

Natalie, Natalie.

En su pieza de la universidad,

un grupo de estudiantes

la esperaba impaciente;

reímos, mucho conversamos,

querían saberlo todo,

Natalie traducía.

 Moscú, los llanos de Ucrania

y Les Champs Elysées

Oh, de todo se habló,

después cantamos;

 Luego, ellos muy alegres,

abrieron botellas

de champagne de Francia,

luego bailamos...

 Cuando todos ya se fueron

y estuvo la fiesta en silencio,

quedé yo solo con mi guía,

Natalie.

 Ya no hubo más preguntas

sobre la Revolución de Octubre;

ya no estábamos allí,

se acabó la tumba de Lenín,

el chocolate del café Pushkín,

todo lejos quedó.

Qué vacía se quedó mi vida,

más sé que un día en París,

seré yo quien servirá de guía,

Natalie, Natalie

@luispereira6915

@darj617

You know it's a great song when they play it all across the world 5 decades later and most people like it without knowing what the lyrics mean.
