I am a 64 year old beginner. Watch all the videos from Johnny. I am aware that this is far beyond what I can actually play. BUT seeing videos like this, and by the way so well explained, that motivises me to continue in learning piano. Probably the day will come that I will be able to play along with Johnny! @@Chordially I had in the age of 8-10 year accordeon lessons. But my teacher that time was a complete idiot. At the end I hated the instrument. Two years ago I purchased a cheap electro piano because I always wanted to play piano. I thought, well buy a cheap piano and when that is nothing for me put it in the garbage box. But it came other way I thought. I was fascinated and here on Youtube I found so many teaching chanells that I kept practising. Took a year ago 20 hrs with a professional piano teacher. So for correct hand positioning and basics. Now I play Czerny and the more simple stuff from many other books I have. AND I purchased a year ago a grand piano. I am aware that I am in an age where some things take a little bit longer. BUT the difference from a kid to me - where the Mum forces her child to learn - I WANT to learn. I suppose that I will never be as good as Johnny is, but for me to have fun at my piano it will do. All the best to Canada! 'Keep swinging' :-)

@@andreasmaier5361 what you say is so true ! Another advantage of age is to realize how many little pieces of music puzzle have been collected through the years. Many problems of attention deficit have built as much obstacles to music reading or instrument learning. But... My brain has recorded a lot. My childhood dream was to play alll sorts of instruments, for the pleasure of producing myself the sounds feelings. And today, after having "learned" by myself alto sax and Bflat clarinet, I felt the necessity of "mastering" music reading. Several weeks of attentive reading have awaken the old dream to play the piano. I've bought a good Roland electronic piano (the one that "sounded" like - or better than - in my dreams). And the pleasure of study and practise combines with the wise patience of my age. All the best to Germany, of course.
P.S. for the "swinging" part of your good wish, I have to work several times before speed enough. I've heard a piano teacher say that the secret of success is in the slowness; which paradoxically saves a lot of time to the student. ;-)

Really good stuff. Its also common, here in Brazil, to just repeat the same bass note - instead of alternating the root with the 5th - to make it sound more bossa than samba.

The progression, in general, sounds so much better if one uses an A7ALT instead of a vanilla A7. As always we must consider how it fits in the particular song.

Thanks! Reminds me of all the times I clapped and slapped with Brubeck and Morello on the 5/4, 7/4, and 11/4 numbers on his landmark albums "Time Out" and "Time Further Out". Jobim and Gilberto also intrigued me with their sensual, intricate bossa rhythms. Lastly, I loved Sergio Mendes' beats on "Berimbau" and of course "Mais Que Nada".

Me too...we grew up learning jazz from Dave and Paul Desmond on records. When Bossa hit in 1964 we would listen to those syncopated rhythms and try our best to figure them out.... now, there's YT with plenty breakdowns.. life is sweet.

Your music sheet says "Desifinado" when the correct is "Desafinado". Excellent video, I had never been taught to rationalize progressions before.

if you saw that documentary or instructional video with donald fagan, he'll often just start with a simple ass blues progression (literally I IV V) and transmogrify it using variegated jazz substitution techniques. i think that gives the song some sort of earthy grounding...

Really gringo-ized interpretation, no rhythmic subtlety and standard vanilla Real Book harmonic simplification—yawn inducing.
Sorry, but if this was the original version of this tune it would never have become the classic it is. Jobim deserves better.
I suggest if you want to learn the real way to play it you should watch the Jobim versions on YouTube, especially the live concerts.
