Chanteur, claviériste, auteur et compositeur, il naît d’un père violoniste le 18 avril 1964 à Saint Claude en Guadeloupe, l’une des contrées musicalement les plus stimulantes des antilles. Ses talents s’exercent dès son jeune âge. A quatorze ans, il constitue le groupe jazz Power avec son frère aîné Jean-Claude. Après avoir joué du piano avec différents groupes – certains mythiques – L’express-Band, les Aiglons, Pakala et les Vikings notamment, il devient vers le milieu des années 80, l’un des musiciens de studio les plus sollicités. Ses premiers disques sous son nom, enregistrés entre 1986 et 1988 (rêve bleu, le tube a pa pawol an lè et diaman d’eben) remportent un succès immédiat et lui ouvrent les portes de la diaspora antillaise.
Les albums s’enchaîneront désormais à une cadence régulière (Absence, Kanel, Frékans, Jukebox, Fifty Fifty, Surround, S’Kiss, Sans Prévenir), avec un zouk novateur, richement harmonisé et débordant de sensualité, dont Gilles Floro devient l’un des fers de lance. Jazz, funk, reggae, salsa, dance : tout stimule son inventivité, avec un swing toujours irrésistible et un style en perpétuelle évolution.
Les paroles de ses chansons se nourrissent elles aussi de ses multiples expériences, tous les thèmes sont abordés : solitude (tou sel), tristesse (pawol), paix (compren), tendresse (kalin, complice), spiritualité (pawol, spiritual), rêves (utopie), amour de la mer (fifty fifty), ou de sa fille taïna (mon soleil).
Le 21 juillet 1999, un gigantesque concert intitulé « quarante tambours contre le son de la violence » réunissant plus d’une centaine d’amis musiciens et danseurs est organisé à sa mémoire dans les jardins de l’archipel, à Basse terre, et "Désolé", son album posthume sortait trois mois plus tard.
Gilles nous a quitté le 22 juin 1999 à l’âge de 36 ans en réparant la toiture de sa maison.

Le zouk mon dieu c'était vraiment mieux avant il y avait de la spiritualité des paroles sincères tout était chanter avec émotions et avec le talent .Maintenant nous avons Quoi?
Du zouk qu'en français et que des je t'aime tu me manque tu étais l'amour de ma vie je peux pas vivre sans toi.
