I'll Fly Away
Gillian Welch Alison Lyrics

I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Oh, how glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die, Hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away
The lyrics to Gillian Welch's song "I'll Fly Away" speak about the hope of escaping this mortal coil and entering into eternal life after death. These lyrics capture the Christian belief of an afterlife that is better than this life on earth, where there will be "no more cold iron shackles" and "a land where joys will never end." The imagery used in the lyrics depicts a person who is weighed down by the burdens of this life, who longs to break free from the restrictions and limitations that this life imposes on them. The person is like a bird trapped in a cage, but when they die, they are finally set free.
The song's uplifting melody and lyrics have made it a staple of gospel music, and it has been covered by many popular artists, such as Johnny Cash and Alison Krauss. The song is often performed at funerals to uplift those in mourning and remind them of the hope of eternal life. The lyrics of "I'll Fly Away" inspire listeners to believe in the promise of an afterlife, and to look forward to the day when they too will be able to fly away to a better place.

I went to a local homeless man's funeral in our small town. He requested this song and it moved me to tears, he was such a kind, unassuming man. R.I.P. Larry Gibbs

Took my my wife to see Allison Krauss front row for our anniversary in 2017. Our wedding song was 'When You Say Nothing At All'. She had an Aneurysm rupture in June 2020 at 51 yrs old and has been in a nursing home since. This song is very tough to hear but all I can hope is that she hears this and feels comfort....

This song is a lot more personal to me.
My former first-grade teacher, Tina, passed away from a Brain Aneurysm a few days before Christmas. This song was played while people put flowers on her box of ashes. There was a pot full of them, but I went to the edge of the sand and grass on the beach and plucked two stems of Sour Grass and tied them into a knot, forming a heart. I then walked over to her ashes and placed them on top of her little box. I literally could not stop crying, along with everyone else around me at her memorial. At the very end of the memorial service, her husband and brother paddled out to the ocean and spread her ashes.
Tina was the kind of person who made everyone feel better without you realizing it. My brother was friends with her son and my mom was friends with her. It took me until that day to come to terms with the fact that she was gone.
Miss you Ms. Tina...
