Keep It to Yourself
Gimp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She fights addiction
Claims she's a victim
She tries to hold back
What she'll never give back
"My hands are tied yeah" she says with a smile
I wanna wanna be
I said I wanna wanna be anywhere but here
Where's the hate when you need it
Where's the hate when you want it all
Where's the anger when you can't see
We are emotionally drained
We are emotionally drained
We are emotionally drained

And when he'd send it
He can't defend it
He tries to hold back
What he'll never give back
"My hands are tied yeah" he says with a smile
I wanna wanna be
I said I wanna wanna be anyone but me

Where's the hate when you need it
Where's the pain when you want it all
Where's the anger when you can't see
We are emotionally drained
We are emotionally drained
We are emotionally drained

Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself yourself
Keep it to yourself yourself yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself yourself yourself yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself
Keep it to keep it to yourself
Keep it to yourself

Overall Meaning

In "Keep It to Yourself," Gimp paints a picture of people struggling with addiction, trying to hold back something they know they'll never be able to give back. The song speaks to the pain of being emotionally drained and the search for a way to express that feeling. The lyrics are sung from two different perspectives, one of a female and one of a male, both trying to hold back what they are feeling and desperately wanting to be anyone but themselves. The phrase "My hands are tied" is repeated throughout the song, driving home the idea that the characters feel powerless to escape their situation.

The chorus of the song asks, "Where's the hate when you need it? Where's the anger when you can't see?" It questions why it's so hard to feel anything at all when in pain. The repetition of "We are emotionally drained" emphasizes the idea that the characters are worn out and left feeling empty. The final line "Keep it to yourself" is repeated over and over, possibly suggesting that the characters feel as though no one will listen even if they express what they're going through.
