I live in a sub-tropical region in South Africa and have been growing ginger for a few years now for own use.
Your advice is spot on.
Mine is planted outside in a shallow long garden bed in semi-shade / sun. Lots of organic compost aided by some cow manure and very occasionally some commercial fertilizer.
It does flower and grows quite vigerously.
I harvest once a year after the plants die back slightly and then immediately re-plant for the new season.
Very rewarding.
Thank you for the info. on making the powder. Am I correct in assuming that you 115 deg. temperature recommendation was deg F ? and not, as we use here, deg. C.?

This is the video that inspired me to start gardening... my first ginger plant was in a 1/2 liter tupperware with no holes and clay soil. I planted it in January (cold, but I'm from the tropics, so 12-15C cold). I overwatered it coz I had no idea what an inch of water meant, and it obviously died. From then till now I've grown water spinach, malabar spinach, ginger, cucumber, okra, garlic and onion leaves, lemongrass, sweet potato, spring onion, culantro, ixora (regular and dwarf), cape jasmine, lantana, crape jasmine, mustard, cilantro, and flat beans, all in about six feet of my backyard. I had Covid in April, and I also found gardening a way to relax and take my mind off things. So thanks a bunch for inspiring me to take up gardening. :D

Awesome! Same method to grow turmeric, alot of powders have been unscrupulously adulterated with lead, even! Beautiful chartreuse leaves that need alot of water! Anti inflamatory, anti cancer! (for best absorption add black pepper). Heard of people making lacto fermented okra, found young plants. Pickled fiddleheads (young ostrich fern coils) turned out great, better than hosta shoots. Trying cattail hearts next!! Probiotics enhance immune system! Most store bought pickles have lost those enzymes from pasturization to extend shelf life!

@sabit You don’t need much room for seedings. You can start them in very small pots. I just remembered: I started some tomato plants that way, crowded into a window sill. I did start some other vegetable seeds outside, too, and the successful starts were with a dab of fish emulsion into the root area (diluted- and early morning, but do that- feed that is- in the evening if the next day is going to be hot). I would sprinkle used coffee grounds on the plant against slugs and wood ash against aphids. Planting marigolds near the tomatoes helps keep bugs away, too. They did pretty well, actually. Ginger is a tropical and sub-tropical plant that is usually sheltered by trees above so it is important to grow it in the shade. Protect it from the harsh sun if grown in part shade. This will help keep the soil moist too.

My ginger plant is growing great! One thing I discovered, however, is that the ginger root that you buy at a grocery store is sprayed with something that prevents it from sprouting! So I bought my initial root to plant at a natural foods market where I was certain it was organic and free of any kind of spray. It was the first time I was able to successfully grow a beautiful plant! Thanks for the great video!

I've been using a technique for a while now where you let the eyes of the ginger sprouts,cut them off and plant directly into the soil. That way,you don't have to put an entire ginger in the soil and also,you will get a new ginger out of one sprout. It's very effective. Hope it helps.

Just wanted to share what I use for a budget/free wide-pot: 2.5 gallon water jugs. Cut off one side and poke some holes on the other for drainage, and you have a perfect container for ginger, lettuce, small radish and other shallow-rooted plants 🌿 👍

About 4 years ago, I had some ginger left and put it in a pot. Just wanted to see if I could grow it. It was a pretty big pot. Last year, it "blew" up the post. It grew really nicely, but I never broke up the pieces. Doing that tomorrow. I can't believe I got so much from the little piece I planted.

Grating ginger - I've always fought the strings and the loss of juice, when trying to grate it. I've since started keeping ginger in the freezer. It grates super fine and there's no loss of juice and NO strings. Perfect for making Chai tea, in soups or anywhere you'd use grated ginger.

I'm glad this was suggested to me because I realized I planted my ginger completely wrong. It looked like it was starting to grow from the nodes and I planted it straight up only to realize now that I was wrong so thank you I will fix it. Thanks for growing and showing how to prepare it. Its most helpful to have as much thorough info as possible. So many times i get bits and pieces of info from so many places but it gets lost. I think learning things in a more complete way, step by step is important for retaining specific details on a particular topic. I tried growing ginger when I lived in Florida.. it always rotted. I had a bunch of ginger rhizomes in a bowl on my counter last summer (not in Florida) and really wasn't using it much for what ever reason so it was neglected let's say. I start seeing all these sprouts! I'm excited trying to figure out how to plant them and grow them... finally! There was no water in that bowl they were in on my counter btw. So I planted the sprouting rhizomes...I water very little and they are growing beautifully. All by 'accident'... can't wait for the harvest.

A tip when grinding... when you’re done, turn the grinder upside down and hit the grind button again. You get most all of whatever you’re grinding in the lid/cup and it’s much easier to transfer. 😊

I also use a small house paintbrush or a larger painting brush to get as much of the powder out of the grinder and bowls.
I've learned that powders need conditioned also or they will either become like bricks in the container they are put in or get contaminated.

I ended cutting the ginger from the store into individual squares with one eye in each segment... that is what another YouTube video said to do. I am a new subscriber although I have been watching your videos for awhile. I love your videos. You are very good at giving information. I have learned a lot from watching you. Thank you for the video. I am already planning things to grow next year, thyme and ginger are on the list. I learned how to make tea with just using thyme and ginger to help clear your lungs. It actually works amazing. We have suffered from covid this year. My son has asthma and the covid hit him really hard. He has been sick for over 6 months, not contagious, but, it has been his lungs and breathing. I have been buying organic thyme and organic dried minced ginger. I bought tea bags and put 1 teaspoon of each in a tea bag and put it in a little crock I have. I had no idea it would make a tea. He calls it his spicy tea. It works wonders to clear up his lungs and helps him expel the phlegm from his lungs that settles over night. Next year I will be growing our own!

Great tutorial. One note as a commercial grower…. Store bought Ginger is sprayed with growth inhibitors to prevent sprouting on the shelf…. Recommend soaking overnight to help remove these hormones to help sprout sooner.

It is now "officially" spring here, so I guess it's time to plant! I cook a LOT of Indian food, so, I can't wait to have my own home grown Ginger! Cheers!

I had an amazing ginger plant in Florida that came back every year & spread out. It had hot pink flowers and in each section was a little yellow flower — kind of like a snapdragon bloom. Any idea what variety this was? Thanks. Great video BTW.

I've had a turmeric root for 2 years now, I live in cold winter area so I bring it in and it keeps on growing compared to ginger the leaves are huge I've not had flowers but it's a showy plant!

Dear Kevin good evening from Greece, following your instructions I did succed to start growing the plants. Now they are like 10-15 cm tall but some leaves have a pale yellowish brownish discoloration. It reminds me of chlorosis in viniculture. Could not find any internet information. With ginger being sold for $45 a kilo in stores, ( in Australia), I've been wanting to know how to grow my own for a while now as I use it in making my Kombucha.

Magnesium and potassium from banana peels soaked in water. Great fertilizer.

Thank you for your video. It was clear and informative. And I really appreciate the instructions for drying and grinding. I've been meaning to try my hand at making my own ginger powder and I feel confident that I can now, after watching you make it. Just a note: If you want to use supermarket ginger for growing purposes, it might be better to get organic ginger. That way it's free from pesticides or any unwanted chemicals.

2 years ago I planted a ginger that was growing on my counter. I had it under a grow light. The sprout turned out to be a flower, which smelled AMAZING, but it never grew any leaves. I'm not sure why it did that lol

I freeze my cleaned ginger and then grate it into recipes with a micro-grater. It makes fantastic tea filtered through a tea strainer. It is so fine when grated, it immediately defrosts. There is a local grower near me and he said to bury your yearly stock in very dry sand and then only dig up what you need and it won't mold and stays fresh.

Mint tea also helps. My gastroenterologist recomended it to me 30 years ago. (He uses peppemint oil in the operating theatre to relax guts.)

I live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where it's still cold but warming up in March. It can still be cool in April. In October it's often relatively warm early on, but can get cold by late October, as it did this year. When at this rate would you recommend I plant ginger?

Any soil that is loose, well draining, and preferably a pH of 5.8-6.2. If you can keep it moist and shaded as well. A bit of coir, coconut fibre, can be a good way to retain some moisture.

I love the taste and smell of ginger and would like to try this. I'm in the UK where we can get all four seasons in one day! At the moment the temperature is 14C (58F) so not sure if I can grow ginger here or not. I do have a greenhouse though but due to disability I haven't used it for a couple of years.

I’m really glad I came across your channel. I found a ginger root from the grocery and the shoots are green. I set it in shallow water and went here to find out what to next.
It’s so expensive I just have to try as I love ginger every which way.

You might want to add that those fingers/growths will grow in the direction that they are planted ,place your cut off end[butt end ]in the centre of the pot and have the growing points facing the outside of the pot.

When it is done fresh, it smells awesome. Turmeric also grows about the same as ginger. Two less spices you have to buy at the store.

just come across your clip on ginger cultivation - wow! How easy it seems - definitely going to give this a go. I live in the North of England in the UK, so have a small greenhouse for more "tropical" plants, and all my seedlings, but do bring things inside in autumn/ winter that might otherwise die during our cold winters/frosts etc... I've grown from seed/pip established lemon trees and orange trees (they live inside), pomegranate seedlings, mango seedling and trialing growing my first avocado seed - I'm really pleased with the pomegranate seedlings, as all 6 of them have sprouted! I now need to find time to check out all your other videos - I'm going to have no space left in my house or garden at this rate...

Hi, I just bought the Mioga variety of ginger. I know it's more resistant to frost (-17°c if the saler is to be trusted). Is there anything special to do to care for this type of ginger ? They are sprooted plant in pots. I put them in my veranda which has a minimal temperature of 15° and a lot of sun. I live in Belgium and plan to transplant them in my garden when the risk of frost has passed

Hi Kevin! I have not been having any luck getting my ginger to root. I was wondering if conventional Ginger is sprayed with a root inhibitor? I have avoided conventional potatoes for that reason. I'll have to grab some organic ginger and have another go. I ordered some Birdie raised beds today. The voles and/or chipmunks are already eating my unripe strawberries! You are a great inspiration and always have some helpful tips to offer, thanks for all you do!

I left a peice of ginger in my fruit bowl on the counter for a long time and forgot about it, well I just went to grab a banana and there was a shoot growing from it! I was so happy when I saw it, it was a little surprise!! 😂 I can't wait to grow my plant! 😍😍 I only bought it because I was starting to develop a cold, so I ate a few peices raw and swallowed them. Well I didn't get end up getting sick, yayy! But now that my plant has healed me, I would like to give it a permanent place in my garden and try to keep the same plant alive for many years.. our winter in Arizona is very mild, and I think It can survive if I cover it up during winter.. I just think the plant is so beautiful. When it comes to plants in my own garden, I really struggle harvesting them because they're my babies, I will only take as much as I need if I feel like I am dying lol😆
