Looking for the One
Ginger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place
Except you and me
So set 'em' up Joe, I got a little story
I think you should know

We're drinking my friend, to the end
Of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

I know the routine, put another nickel
In the machine
I feel kind of bad, can't you make the music
Easy and sad

I could tell you a lot, but it's not
In a gentleman's code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet
And I've got a lot of things I'd like to say
And if I'm gloomy, please listen to me
Till it's talked away

Well that's how it goes, and Joe I know your gettin'
Anxious to close
Thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind

My bending your ear
But this torch that I found, It's gotta be drowned
Or it's gonna explode
Make it one for my baby

And one more for the road

Overall Meaning

Ginger's song "Looking for the One" begins with a reference to a classic song "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)" by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. The opening lines of Ginger's song "It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place, except you and me. So set 'em up Joe, I got a little story I think you should know" are almost identical to the opening lines of the former song, which tells the story of a man who's drowning his sorrows at a bar, trying to get over someone he's lost.

Ginger carries on with the same theme of drinking and trying to cope with a loss, but adds her own unique twist. The lyrics reflect the vulnerability of the human condition and the desperation one feels when looking for that special someone. The verse "You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet, And I've got a lot of things I'd like to say, And if I'm gloomy, please listen to me, Till it's talked away," sheds an introspective light on the singer's true feelings, revealing that she is more than just a party girl looking to hook up.

The song's closing line "But this torch that I found, It's gotta be drowned or it's gonna explode. Make it one for my baby and one more for the road," is an invitation to make one last toast and drown the pain with one more drink, before moving on from the lost love of her life.

Ginger is like that girl you had a crush on in high school that would tease you and make you think you had a chance when in reality you didn’t have a chance in hell

@rohitnautiyal7090

If you fall for it it sticks with you for ever.

@johnspinelli9396

Yup I know exactly what you mean

@billkgeorge

Actually this is the kind of woman you have a superb chance with if you spend a load on her, treat her nicely first & then treat her bad. Gold miner, not wife material.
