Ocean Drain
Ginger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunset at the beach
Staring at the sea
It seems to just go on
Mmmmmmm
We live in an ocean drain

We can't refuse a fight
Let's make a stand tonight
You wake up the next day
Mmmmmmmm
Putting it off again

I switched to enthanol
And turned the taps down low
But don't throw out my Raid
A cockroach I can't take
We live in a selfish age

We live in an ocean drain
Mmmm Mmmmm
We live in an ocean drain

It's coming back tonight
To change my way of life
We've known it all along
This can't keep going on
Livin' in our own waste

I seperate the trash
And save my cans for cash
But not without my car
I'll only go so far
We live in a selfish age

We live in an ocean drain
Ohhh
We live in an ocean drain
Ohhh

We said the same old things before
Let's stop it now before it gets worse but then
You'd be the first
And I'll
Be facing death
Before it'll actually make an impact

It's slowly flowing down
It's seeping through the ground
And here it comes to me
This sewer called the sea

We live in an ocean drain
Ohhh
We live in an ocean drain
Ohhh
We live in an ocean drain

Overall Meaning

In this song, Ginger is reflecting on the state of the world we live in and likens it to an ocean drain. The opening lines depict a peaceful scene at the beach, but it quickly becomes apparent that even there, we can't escape the reality of our situation. It seems as if the ocean goes on forever, but unfortunately it's more like an endless drain, and we're all caught in it.

The second verse urges people to take action and make a stand against the pollution and destruction we're inflicting on the planet, but the following lines suggest that people have become complacent and are reluctant to take action. The switch to ethanol and turning the taps down may seem like small steps, but ultimately it's not enough. Even the line "Putting it off again" speaks to our tendency to procrastinate and avoid dealing with difficult problems.
