Shelflife presents the debut 7" "Jumprope EP" from NYC's newest pop sweethearts Gingerlys out on July 8 2014 on limited edition vinyl and digital formats.
The young group began when guitarist Matt Richards, 26, started sharing acoustic demos of his strummy pop songs with his fellow bandmates in his Valley Stream, New York basement. Vocalist/keyboardist Maria Guernica, 23, guitarist Colin O'Neill, 24, and bassist Kevin Doxsey, 25, brought life to the rough demos. Soon the band became a quintet when Brian Alvarez was drafted permanently behind the drum kit. They recorded this EP with Oliver Ignatius at Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen in Brooklyn and the group subsequently started to play several shows in and around NYC.
Described as "pure ear candy," the EP starts off with "Jumprope" which quickly introduces what Gingerlys are all about -- songs filled with fuzzy guitars, dreampop melodies, guitar hooks galore and Maria's soft sultry vocals. The second track "Summer Cramps" switches from dreamy to jangly, a summer pop anthem that is insanely catchy. The B-side opens with the head-rush breakneck speed of "Better Hearts" and closes with the delightful Felt-ish guitars of "Set You Off".
The band played a fantastic live session on WNYU and are soon playing the NYC Popfest while continuing to work on their full-length album.

Better Hearts
Gingerlys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You don't know me
You don't know me
I've seen better hearts
Than the one you've got
You don't know me
And you show me
You don't own me,
You don't know me,
Won't be letting you take my cupcakes
You don't know me
And you show me
Silver lining's anywhere I go
You don't know me
You don't know me
I've seen better hearts
Than the one you've got
You don't know me
And you show me
The lyrics of Better Hearts by Gingerlys is about someone who is confident in their own identity and refuses to be defined by others. The opening line, "silver lining's anywhere I go," suggests that the singer is always able to find the positive aspect of any situation. The repetition of "you don't know me" highlights the idea that the singer doesn't want to be judged or controlled by others. The line "I've seen better hearts than the one you've got" suggests that the singer is capable of evaluating people based on their true character rather than superficial qualities.
The next few lines suggest that the singer is proud of the qualities that make them unique. The line "it is what I have inside my heart" suggests that the true value of a person lies within, and cannot be judged by external factors. The line "won't be letting you take my cupcakes" is a metaphor for the things that make the singer special, and implies that they won't let anyone take that away from them.
The last two lines of the song, "silver lining's anywhere I go, you don't know me and you show me," suggest that despite the challenges that the singer may face in life, they are confident in their ability to find the positive aspects of any situation. The phrase "you don't know me and you show me" suggests that the singer is unafraid to be themselves, regardless of what others may think.
