After refusing to salute the Habsburg badge at Altdorf on Lake Lucerne, he was sentenced to shoot an apple from his son's head. This he did, before shooting the tyrannical Austrian ruler Gessler, thus symbolizing his people's refusal to submit to external authority. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe learned of the Tell saga during his travels through Switzerland between 1775 and 1795 and gave the idea to his friend Friedrich von Schiller, who in 1803-04 wrote the play William Tell. Rossini used Schiller's play as the basis for his opera

I remember I was leaving school one day, and I was stepping on the bus when I realized I left my trombone in the classroom. I was listening to music and this song came on. I ran all the way back up three flights of stairs, grabbed it, hauled it BACK downstairs, and sprinted out the front doors. The buses were starting their engines and I could see people laughing at me through the bus windows. I made it just in time, and this song is now called "the Trombone Dash" in my mind.

When my brother and I were really young, maybe 3 or 4, every once in a while on a Sunday morning, my Dad would put this record on, and turn it up LOUD. Then he would burst into our bedrooms, hollering at his "troops" to get the lead out... we would leap out of bed in our footy pajamas, and "gallop" on our horses around the house behind Dad, imaginary swords upraised, yelling "CHARGE!!!" at the top of our lungs... over furniture, around my mom trying to cook breakfast... down the hall, over the beds, round and round the coffee table...
BEST way to wake up EVAR!!
My Dad was a difficult man... but every time I hear this song, I remember him playing Charge! with us, and I remember that he loved us, and there are some good memories.
Thank you, Rossini...
