La manifestazione in cui morì Zibecchi
Giovanna Marini Lyrics

"Guardate, guardate, ci sparano addosso!"

Chi raccoglie i bossoli e li guarda senza fiato
Chi cerca di scappare, i ferri pedonali
"Sparano, sparano!", continuano a gridare
E si aggrappano uno all'altro, fermano chi vuole scappare

Ora sparano, sparano e continuano a sparare

Guardava, pensava, guardava, pensava
Tutta la notte come un testimone, guardava, pensava, guardava, pensava

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Giovanna Marini's song "La manifestazione in cui morì Zibecchi" depict a scene of chaos and tragedy during a protest. The first stanza describes the commotion in the square, with people running, screaming, and crying. Although those inside their homes are unaware of what is happening, the sound of sirens, shouts, and the smell of smoke and fumes permeate the air. The cry of "assassins" continues to echo.

The second stanza introduces two men wearing light shirts, who are overcome with emotion and unable to speak. Zibecchi, presumably a victim of the unrest, lies on the ground with his head on the step and his arms reaching forward, appearing as though he is calling for help. While his head remains back, distant and detached, his legs are present but seem to belong to no one. An elderly woman emerges from a doorway, shouting "assassins" and manages to stop two police officers.

In the following verse, the woman bravely advances with her hands raised, only to be overpowered by ten more officers who descend from a police van. They forcefully drag her onto a military vehicle, and she disappears from public knowledge since then. Despite the horrific events, some individuals believe it to be a procession and proclaim it as such, but the frenzied jeeps no longer allow anyone to pass. Then, a group of men appear with their hands full of stones, frantically shouting that they are being shot at.

The next verse describes the spreading rumor that shots are being fired, and the cries continue to amplify. People throw themselves to the ground, while some collect spent cartridges with bated breath, and others attempt to escape through pedestrian gates. They shout "they're shooting" and hold onto each other, blocking those who want to flee. Finally, a respected man arrives, a member of parliament, looking around and calling for help. He is still wearing his pajama jacket as he resides in the building above, trying to sleep.

The man begins to shout, asking what is happening and urging someone to call for help. However, the people have gone mad, and no one can stop them anymore. The lyrics mention that one police officer has already killed someone. The shooting persists, and the man inside the bar goes silent as he dials a number on the phone. He holds a crumpled notebook and urgently says there is no time, urging them to move quickly and create cordons as the people have gone mad. He emphasizes the importance of being present because anything could happen if they are not there.

The final verses describe the man traversing the city at night, leaving behind a hungry and unsettled population. He observes the scene, witnessing people dying, running, and suffering. He questions what is happening and what he should do. He feels that he cannot return home and must stay to bear witness and tell the story. Throughout the entire night, he watches, thinks, and contemplates, just like a witness to a tragic event.
