Believe in Yourself
Girls Under Glass Lyrics

You were my god, my guilded picture of my fantasy
You were my hero but then I saw that you are just a human
You were my hero but now your altar's bursting into flames
Forget your idols, believe in yourself
Use your power to be free
Then my picture's decaying to dust, burning in the fire...
You were my god, I am able to see that every fault is also yours
All the pictures blow with the wind when I see clear
You were my god, my guilded picture of my fantasy
You were my hero but then I saw that you were just a human
Forget your idols, believe in yourself
Use your power to be free
Then my picture's decaying to dust, burning in the fire...
Have the courage and be yourself,
Forget your heroes, believe in yourself
Find the right way that leads you to the end,
The end of this control
Until your soul is free....right now!
The lyrics of "Believe in Yourself" by Girls Under Glass speak about the end of idolization and the importance of finding one's true self. The first stanza speaks about a person who was once seen as a hero or a god, someone that was admired and even worshiped. The person becomes disillusioned after realizing that the idolized individual is just another human being, flawed and prone to mistakes. The metaphor of the altar adorned with flowers bursting into flames symbolizes the destruction of the pedestal the person had placed their hero on.
The chorus encourages the listener to forget their idols and believe in themselves, to use their own power to be free. The second stanza repeats the same format as the first, with an additional layer of realization that the faults of the once-hero are now seen as the person's own. The bridge then exhorts the listener to have the courage to be themselves and find their own way, free of the control of others.
The song's message encourages individuals to break free from the constraints that idolization puts on them and find their own path. The lyrics highlight the idea that we can only truly be free when we realize that the figures we have put on a pedestal are simply humans with their own flaws and imperfections. This realization allows us to focus on our own selves and discover our own potential.
