During 1989 Girls Under Glass supported bands such as Fields of the Nephilim, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and were just big stars in the German gothic-wave-scene. At this point of time the band was playing together with two guest musicians (Marcel Zürcher, drummer of Abwärts, Schwansee, Shanghaid Guts) and Olaf O (bassplayer). Flowers (second album was recorded). Members: Thomas Lücke (vocals) Zaphor (guitars) Hauke Harms (keyboards), Axel Ermes (bassplayer). Axel joined the band and was integrated into the real band-line up. Axel and Zaphor played at this point of time parallel in the German cult band Cancer Barrack.
In 1990 Zaphor left Cancer Barrack and concentrated on the third GUG album. Main singer Thomas Lücke left the band and Zaphor took over the singers part. Die Krupps did a remix of "Die Zeit", which became a club hit in Germany. For this record the band was touring with Robert Wilcocks again. Additional drums on tour were played by Tippi Agogo (musician from Vancouver and close friend to The Legendary Pink Dots and Skinny Puppy musicians-scene).
Firewalker was recorded in 1997. The hardest record GUG ever made. Totally inspired by the American industrial metal & electro music scene such as NIN, KMFDM, Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, etc. Girls asked ex-KMFDM drummer Rudi Naomi to join the band for the tour. GUG toured together with Deathline Int´l, a German-American-electro-act.
In 1998 Equilibrium was recorded with Hall Of Sermon. GUG calmed down a bit and found their way back to the more Gothic and Wave orientated style.
The seminal anthology record Nightmares for the United States was compiled in 1999. The record includes the biggest hits of GUG's career as well as out of print and new unreleased tracks including a cover of the classic track "Halloween" theme by John Carpenter.

Frozen
Girls Under Glass Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Love behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen
I can see a frozen point in time
Tongue of fire tracing lips' outline
Where frozen breath originates
With one motion of her wanting eyes
She strips everything away
This one moment is intensified
And the colors all fade to grey
I am in the only place that I want to be
Though we know that it ends eventually
But it's alright because right now we're frozen
"I want to forget mistakes they've helped me make
It's better to be broken than to break"
Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Love behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen
I can see a frozen point in time
That is easy to retrace
Light and darkness are both intertwined
The elements are in their place with
One motion of her wanting mind
The real world begins to fade
And all the hateful things I have become
Temporarily go away
Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Love behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen
When my mind's frozen
I'll take you anwhere you want to go
Far from anything that feels like home (lets go)
You are anyone I want to be (it's here and now, and now it's only you and me)
It's never enough (mmm, that's true)
I want to stay here (yeah, and I do too)
Breakin' it down (takin' it down)
With smell (smell), touch (touch, taste (taste), sight (sight), and sound (sound)
How long will I be here without you near because I'm so cold
Break them first or I'll get broken is not what I was told, now I'm so cold
I'm so cold
So cold
Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Love behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen
Inside this fantasy
It seems so real to me
Synthetic ecstasy, when her legs are open
True Love behind a wall
Where men and angels fall
A fading memory, when my mind is frozen
"Frozen" by Girls Under Glass is a song about a man who finds escape in his fantasies. The lyrics describe a sexual encounter with a woman who he sees as a perfect fantasy. He uses words like "synthetic ecstasy" to describe the feeling he experiences when he is with her. The line "True Love behind a wall" refers to the barriers that exist between the man and the woman that make their relationship impossible. The line "Where men and angels fall" suggests that this is a love that is doomed from the start, falling just as men and angels do.
He sees her as a point in time that he can revisit, with her appearance exactly as it was before. The color palette in the song is grey, suggesting that the fantasy is a bleak one. The lyrics explain that the man wants to forget his mistakes, but the danger of his obsession is that he becomes more broken in the process. He knows that this fantasy can only last for a time and that it will eventually come to an end. Despite this, he wants to stay in this fantasy world for as long as possible.
The chorus repeats a significant line, "when my mind is frozen," adding a sense of repetition that reinforces the idea that this is a cycle that the singer is trapped in. The lyrics come full circle with the final verse repeating the same lines as the opening verse but now with the added knowledge that the fantasy has reached its end.
