Knight started to record solo material due to legal issues that forced her and The Pips to record separately. Her solo debut "Miss Gladys Knight" was released in 1978 followed by "Gladys Knight" on Colombia Records. Knight recorded the title track for the James Bond movie "Licence To Kill." It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #6. Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" was released in 1991 on MCA Records (now Geffen Records). The album quickly climbed the charts to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features the lead single, "Men" (#2 R&B). Her fourth album, "Just For You" followed in 1995. The album went Gold. Knight most recent album is her critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Before Me", released in 2006.

Oh you're too much for me baby
More than my heart can stand
Like a kid behind the wheel
You been reckless with my heart
If I stay around you sure to tear it all apart
Said the road's got to end somewhere
Every road's got to end somewhere
So let me give you the low down
We've come to the end of our road
Just think about all the times you let me at home lonely
You only did it 'cause you know I loved you only
Runnin' around with every girl in town
I'm telling you boy no longer will I be your clown
Said the road's got to end somewhere
Every road has got to end somewhere
Sick and tired of your stuff
Said enough is enough
We've come to the end of our road
No, no, no, no, no
Sorry baby I just have to go
You made more sense when you begged and you pleaded
Talkin' bout I'm the one you're needing
Said I done had my fill of you
Hurt me so through the years
I've done sure enough run out of tears
Telling you I couldn't cry if I wanted to
Said the road's got to end somewhere
Well now every road has got to end somewhere
Time and again I beg you to slow down
So I'm givin you the low down
We've come to the end of our road
(This is the end, the end of our road)
(This is the end, the end of our road)
(This is the end, the end of our road)
These lyrics are about a person who has reached their breaking point in a relationship that they can no longer continue. The singer realizes that they need to end things with their significant other because the relationship has become too much for them to handle. The metaphor of a road is used to represent the relationship and the person has finally reached the end of it. They feel like they're trapped behind the wheel with a reckless driver, indicating that their partner's behavior has caused damage to their heart, and if they stay around, their heart will break.
The singer recounts all the times they were left alone at home while the partner was out with other women. They state that they will no longer be their partner's clown and that they’re tired of being taken for granted. The singer is no longer interested in begging and pleading with their significant other to change their ways. They’re done being hurt and have run out of tears, making it clear that they’re done and the relationship has come to a definite end.
Overall, this song is about the end of a relationship that’s been long overdue, and the person has decided to move on for their own emotional well-being.

Gladys did it with this--brought me into a spell of joyful tears. Rinsed my agony drenched heart. Sometime a good ole soulful song pulls those reluctant tears out, even of a big old grown man. The older you get, the more sentimental you get, especially when think back on late loved ones that are no longer with us--grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and childhood friends. Thank you Gladys, thank you!
