Knight started to record solo material due to legal issues that forced her and The Pips to record separately. Her solo debut "Miss Gladys Knight" was released in 1978 followed by "Gladys Knight" on Colombia Records. Knight recorded the title track for the James Bond movie "Licence To Kill." It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #6. Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" was released in 1991 on MCA Records (now Geffen Records). The album quickly climbed the charts to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features the lead single, "Men" (#2 R&B). Her fourth album, "Just For You" followed in 1995. The album went Gold. Knight most recent album is her critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Before Me", released in 2006.
Money
Gladys Knight Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It don't bother, it don't bother me
Money is the root of all evil
(Evil is the root of most people)
Evil is the root of most people, yeah
(I don't know
Get good, get good)
Money is the key to Hollywood
Expensive cars and fancy homes
Out here on the Strip, everybody's hip
Nearly everybody stays strong
Everybody knew everything
Just as long as you got some bread
The ladies and the gents perk their compliments
And they work right on your head
(Money is the root of all evil)
Money, money, money, money, money
(Evil is the root of most people)
Evil is the root of most people
(I don't know
Get good, get good)
Money is the key to politics
And the ganster with the gun in his hand
People turning tricks just to get some kicks
And it's written all over the land
We all need a little money
It's so, so sad, but true
Prices are so high, costs too much to die
It's the last thing that we do
(Money is the root of all evil)
Money is the root of all evil
(Evil is the root of most people)
Evil is the root of most people, yeah
(I don't know
Get good, get good)
Sure don't bother me
Money is the root of all evil
Money is the root of all evil
(Evil is the root of most people)
Evil is the root of most people, yeah
(I don't know) I don't know
(Get good, get good)
You said it
I said
Money is the root of all evil
(Evil is the root of most people)
Evil is the root of most people
(I don't know
Get good, get good)
The lyrics of Gladys Knight & The Pips's song "Money" explore the theme of the role of money in modern society. The song portrays money as a powerful tool that allows people to achieve their dreams, but it also notes that money can be the reason for negative behaviors and outcomes as well. The first verse of the song asserts that money is the root of all evil, but then goes on to explain that people are the real culprits of bad behaviors, using money as a convenient scapegoat. The chorus repeats the phrase "Money is the root of all evil" but adds "evil is the root of most people," expressing the idea that people's tendency towards greed and selfishness are the real sources of trouble in the world.
The second verse of the song examines how money impacts Hollywood and politics. On the one hand, money is key to getting ahead in these industries, allowing people to buy expensive cars and fancy homes. On the other hand, it also highlights how the pursuit of money can lead to unsavory behavior, such as crime, prostitution, and corruption.
Overall, the song takes on a cynical view of money and its role in society, acknowledging the necessity of money in modern life but warning of its corrupting influence. The final line of the song, "Sure don't bother me," seems to suggest that while money may be a necessary evil, the singer is not particularly bothered by it.
