Knight started to record solo material due to legal issues that forced her and The Pips to record separately. Her solo debut "Miss Gladys Knight" was released in 1978 followed by "Gladys Knight" on Colombia Records. Knight recorded the title track for the James Bond movie "Licence To Kill." It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #6. Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" was released in 1991 on MCA Records (now Geffen Records). The album quickly climbed the charts to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features the lead single, "Men" (#2 R&B). Her fourth album, "Just For You" followed in 1995. The album went Gold. Knight most recent album is her critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Before Me", released in 2006.

I put breakfast on your table
And I make sure that your coffee
Has its sugar and cream
Ooh, your eggs are over easy
Your toast done lightly
All that's missing is your morning kiss
Now, now you say your juice is sour
Well, it used to be so sweet (well)
And I can't help but to wonder
If you're talking about me (oh, you're talkin')
We don't talk the way we used to
And it's hurting me so deep
I got my pride, I will not cry
But it's making me weak
I'm not your superwoman
I'm not the kind of girl that you can lay down
And think that everything's okay
Boy, I am only human
(Whoa)
This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me
(Ooh, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby)
I fight a way through the rush hour
Trying to make it home just for you
I want to make sure that your dinner
Will be waiting for you
But when you get there you just tell me
You're not hungry at all
You said you'd rather read the paper
And you don't want to talk
You'd like to think I'm just crazy (crazy, crazy)
When I say that you've changed
Well, I think I know the problem
You don't love me the same
You're just going through the motions
And you're not being fair
I got my pride, I will not cry
But I can't help but care
I'm not your superwoman
(Oh, no, no, no, oh, no, no)
I'm not the kind of girl that you can lay down
And think that everything's okay
Boy, I am only human (I'm only human)
This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me
Oh, baby, look into the corners of your mind (into the corners of my mind)
I'll always be there for you through good and bad times
But I can't be that superwoman that you want me to be
I'll give my (love), everlasting love (hey) if you return love to me
I'm not your superwoman
(Oh, no, no, no)
I'm not the kind of girl that you can lay down
And think that everything's okay
Boy, I am only human (I'm only human)
This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me
Oh, if you feel it in your heart and you understand me
Stop right where you are, everybody sing along with me
Ooh, hoo, hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, hoo, hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't want to be super-super-superwoman (oh, no)
I'm not the kind of girl that you can lay down
And think that everything's okay (don't let me down, don't let me down)
Boy, I am only human (only, only, only, only human, yeah)
This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me
I'm not your superwoman (ooh, not your superwoman)
I'm not the kind of girl that you can lay down
And think that everything's okay (don't even try it)
Boy, I am only human
In the lyrics of Gladys Knight's song "Superwoman," we see the struggle of a woman who has been in a long-term relationship where the spark seems to have faded away. The lyrics depict her efforts to please her partner, from making breakfast to ensuring that dinner is ready when he gets home, but receiving little in return. Her partner no longer shows her the same love and affection he once did, and this makes her feel dehumanized. She goes on to explain that she can't be his "Superwoman" - a person who does everything right and keeps things perfect all the time. She's only human and needs more than a few hugs to feel loved and appreciated.
The song offers a commentary on the societal expectations that are placed on women in relationships - that they need to be perfect and do everything right to keep their partners happy. It also highlights the emotional toll that such expectations can have. The lyrics express the importance of love, affection, and appreciation in a relationship and the need for both partners to put in equal effort.
