Now Shirley Ellis' version is nice but doesn't even come close to the funk that is GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS. Reminds me of my childhood. My mother would rock this joint in the house. I'm now 55 years old and I love this joint as much as I did as a kid. I'm actually going to see THE EMPRESS OF SOUL tomorrow night live in concert. I'm so excited!!! My all time favorite female singer EVER !!!!

Such a terrible version. Killed the song completely. Shirley Ellis sang the song incredibly. Composer Lincoln Chase would roll over in his grave if he heard the Gladys Knight version burying his song. The great song is unrecognizeable here. Horrible. So generic. Non-descript. Sounds like every other song Gladys sings.

I see some funk challenged people on here. ... Shirley Ellis’s 1963 original, great in the early 1960’s R&B era, and Gladys Knight & The Pips’ 1969 update equally as great in the James Brown/Aretha Franklin/Sly Stone/Ike & Tina Turner/Stax/Norman Whitfield funkier Iate 1960’s soul era.
