I Wish It Would Rain
Gladys Knight & The Pips Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunshine blue skies please go away
The girl has found another and gone away.
With her went my future my life is filled with gloom
So day after day I stay locked up in my room.
I know to you, it might sound strange but I wish it would rain,

'Cause so badly I wanna go outside
But everyone knows that a man ain't supposed to cry
Listen, I gotta cry 'cause crying eases the pain,
Oh yeah, people this hurt I feel inside.
Words could never explain, I just wish it would rain.

Day in day out my tear-stained face
Pressed against the window pain,
My eyes search the skies desperately for rain,
Cause rain-drops will hide my tear -drops
And no one will ever know that I'm crying,
Crying when I go outside.
To the world outside my tears,
I refuse to explain, oh I wish it would rain,
Let it rain, let it rain.
I need rain to disguise the tears in my eyes.
Oh, let it rain.

I'm a man and I got my pride
Til' it rains I'm gonna stay inside and let it rain.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gladys Knight & The Pips's song I Wish It Would Rain describe the heart-wrenching pain of a man who has lost the love of his life. The singer is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his girlfriend has found someone else and left him behind. He feels helpless and dejected, as his future seems bleak without her. The sunshine and blue skies only serve as a constant reminder of the happiness that he once had but has now lost. He admits that he wishes it would rain, as it would provide a cover for the tears that he cannot stop shedding.

The man's desire to cry is in direct contrast to what society expects of him as a man. He acknowledges this societal expectation, saying that everyone knows that a man is not supposed to cry. However, he cannot hold back his tears and suggests that crying eases his pain. He is hesitant to explain the hurt he feels to others, as it is difficult to put into words. He thus wishes for rain, as the downpour would be a physical manifestation of the emotions he is experiencing.

The notion of rain being an escape from emotional turmoil is a poignant metaphor that is used throughout the song. The man's face is continually tear-stained, and he seeks solace in the raindrops that will hide his tears. By doing so, he can leave his room and face the outside world without feeling ashamed or exposed. He declares that until it rains, he will stay indoors and let the emotions wash over him. The song's overall message is one of heartbreak, loneliness, and the need for an outlet in times of emotional turmoil.

Ooh-ooh-ooh, hah
Sunshine, blue skies
Please go away
My love has found another
And gone away

With him went my future
My life is filled with gloom
So day after day
I stay locked up in my room

I know to you
It might sound strange
But I wish it would rain
(How I wish that it would rain)
Let it rain, rain, rain, rain

So badly, so badly
I want to go outside
(Such a lovely day)
But I can't stop these tears
From fallin' from my eyes

Listen, I gotta cry
'Cause cryin' eases the pain
Oh, yes it does
(Oh, yes it does)
(Oh, yes it does)

@frankiehunter.

Interesting fact for those who don't know. I checked the Billboard charts, and they say, this record was issued in 1968, seven month after the Temptations original. The Temts reached Nr. 4 and Gladys only Nr. 41. I think it was released too soon, after the original's success. Both versions are great.
