Don't Forget Me
Glass Tiger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You take my breath away
Oh, love thinks it's here to stay
Oh, there's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh, can this be true?

If you could see what I have seen
Oh, broken hearts and broken dreams
Oh, then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

You, you take my breath away
Oh, love thinks it's here to stay
Oh, still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh, can this be true?

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
For heaven's sake
I have loved you for so long
Is loving wrong?

So don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break

I have loved you for so long
Is loving wrong? (Hey)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Glass Tiger's song "Don't Forget Me" express the pain of a person deeply in love who feels that their love interest might not reciprocate the same feelings. The song starts with an expression of the breathlessness and awe the person feels in the presence of their love interest. The lyrics indicate a desire for the love to last forever but an acknowledgement that there is much for the person to do in life. The chorus is a plea for the love interest not to forget the singer if he or she leaves or dies. The second verse portrays the contrast between the feelings of love and the pain of heartbreak, perhaps experienced by the singer in previous relationships. The difficulty of dealing with pain while the love interest is not present is also expressed.

The chorus repeats but adds an urgency to the plea to remember the singer with a mention of heaven. The final lyrics repeat the question of whether loving someone is wrong and return to the plea to remember the singer.

The song is emotional in its message, and the repeated choruses provide a kind of anthem-like quality as if the singer is hoping to make the potential loss of their love into an event of great significance.

Man, this brings it back. 1986, I was working at an art gallery.

I remember a gallery opening party, this song was playing.

I was wearing my sharkskin sport jacket and one my late father's narrow silk ties. My date was wearing a one-piece sequined LBD, and a green surgical glove tied to a barrett in her hair.

Sounds like an absurd thing to wear, but she was such a gorgeous blonde that no one ever noticed what it actually was. All evening, she just got all sorts of compliments on her cool hairclip.

Almost 50 years and that memory still wows me. That was the 80s.

You can’t explain what is was like to live in the 80’s. All you can do is listen to songs like this and be transported back and smile.

It was a totally different time. I loved it and miss it.

We sound like our parents now, who back in the 80s used to tell us how awesome the 60s were. They actually were pretty awesome also but as teens in the 80s. The 60s seemed primitive to us. I'm sure sure 1984 seems extremely primitive to a 16 yr old in 2024.

Actually I think the good range of when the crux of all the good music was made was 1967-1988. After that the bell tolled and the downward spiral started.
