Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone
Glass Tiger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You take my breath away
Oh, love thinks it's here to stay
Oh, there's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh, can this be true?

If you could see what I have seen
Oh, broken hearts and broken dreams
Oh, then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

You, you take my breath away
Oh, love thinks it's here to stay
Oh, still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh, can this be true?

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
For heaven's sake
I have loved you for so long
Is loving wrong?

So don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break

I have loved you for so long
Is loving wrong? (Hey)

Overall Meaning

In the song "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" by Glass Tiger, the singer speaks about his love for someone and the fear that they will be forgotten when they eventually pass away. The opening lines "You take my breath away oh, Love thinks it's here to stay oh" expresses the deep and passionate love that the singer feels for their partner. However, there is a sense of anxiety that one day they will be forgotten "Don't forget me when I'm gone, My heart would break, I loved you for so long, It's nothin' wrong". The chorus is pleading with their loved one to remember them fondly after they are gone.

The singer reminisces on past relationships in the second verse, and how they woke up one day and their loved one was gone. The line "Then I wake up, and you're not there, Pain finds me everywhere, Oh but you don't care" suggests that the person he loves may not have the same level of feelings for him, or has perhaps moved on. Despite this, the singer still cannot stop loving them.

The song elicits a sense of longing and of something precious that may be lost in the future. The fear of being forgotten and the ache of unrequited love are powerful emotions that resonate with many people. The song tells a story that is relatable, emotional, and captures the essence of love and loss.

Man, this brings it back. 1986, I was working at an art gallery.

I remember a gallery opening party, this song was playing.

I was wearing my sharkskin sport jacket and one my late father's narrow silk ties. My date was wearing a one-piece sequined LBD, and a green surgical glove tied to a barrett in her hair.

Sounds like an absurd thing to wear, but she was such a gorgeous blonde that no one ever noticed what it actually was. All evening, she just got all sorts of compliments on her cool hairclip.

Almost 50 years and that memory still wows me. That was the 80s.

You can’t explain what is was like to live in the 80’s. All you can do is listen to songs like this and be transported back and smile.

We sound like our parents now, who back in the 80s used to tell us how awesome the 60s were. They actually were pretty awesome also but as teens in the 80s. The 60s seemed primitive to us. I'm sure sure 1984 seems extremely primitive to a 16 yr old in 2024.

Actually I think the good range of when the crux of all the good music was made was 1967-1988. After that the bell tolled and the downward spiral started.
