Thuggin'
Glasses Malone Lyrics

The only way I've been practicing my whole life to live my life
Is to be responsible for what I do

I don't know how to be responsible
For what every black male did, I don't know

Yes I am gonna say that I'm a thug
That's because I came from the gutter and I'm still here

I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I hate payin' taxes, just hate it
I'm tryna fuck a couple actresses
If I don't got it I'ma make it
Still don't got it, I'ma take it
Run that shit, take your shit, that's what I won't do
Out here doin' what I want to
Nigga you do what you can
That's the difference, I'm a mothafuckin' man
I'm a man, nigga, and as a man I don't take that
I don't do Versace, that's that gay shit
Yeah I said it, I'm a thug
I'm a thug, nigga, guess I need a mothafuckin' hug
Well dig my mama up and tell her give me one
Lotta niggas say they're real, I'm the realest one
I'm the realest, this exactly how I'm feelin', bruh
Ain't no chillin', bruh
I'm a mothafuckin' thug

I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug

It's all about the Benjamins
Nigga, fuck George Zimmerman
How it's pistol versus hand?
Take your whoopin' like a mothafuckin' man
Pussy, damn, how hard can a kid hit?
And why them local rappers ain't did shit?
Lil Wayne said, "Fuck the Heat"
Same local rapper niggas wanted beef
Fun, brother versus brother
No hesitation when you face the same color
None, I'm sayin' what the fuck you niggas stand for?
Guess it's lost in the South, Jim Crow
Still I'm shootin' in the gym
Thinkin' back, shit I couldn't hit the rim
Nigga you should see my game now
If it's a fully, nigga aim down
Let the gun work
Super clean but I've done dirt
Talked the shit until my tongue hurt
And I don't run from skirmishes, nigga
I'm a mothafuckin' thug

I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug
I'm a mothafuckin' thug

Sometimes I look in the mirror and ask myself what I'm scared of
How dare the media portray me this way, I can hear the
Crowd screaming, the weirdest of chants
They all in my ear-a artist of era, role model I can't
It's like I'm a parrot, apparently I'm marking the dance
I seen done with the devil, such a ghetto romance
How many niggas fall victim, looking at you trapped in the system
Mentally they kept you in prison, and you won't get out, no one visit
Open up your mouth no one listen, you in denial, nigga
I'm in denial with you, I dial dead homies numbers off this liquor
Time and time again I find myself inside the cerebellum
Of several felons, Orion's belt couldn't live in my world
I seen tigers, lions let loose and spooked, I'm next door to Earl
I guess I rely on Jesus to save us before I refer
The madness, my neighbors witness ski masks, the masses don't know
I'm packing this four and harassing your hoe
Antagonizing the business you love the most
See the difference to my approach is a 40 ounce at the store
If a forty bounce, to get low, I never learn, I'm hard-headed
The corporate world don't like it, but I said it

I'm a mothafuckin' thug
Look in my eyes, what do you see?
God Orion lives in me
I'm a mothafuckin' thug

I'm a mothafuckin' thug
Look in my eyes, what do you see?
God Orion lives in me
I'm a mothafuckin' thug
Oh, oh I'm a mothafuckin' thug

Thug, thug, all I ever was
Look around, all I ever done
I'm a motherfuckin' thug, thug, thug, all I ever was
Look around, all I ever done
I'm a motherfuckin' thug, thug thug, all I ever was
Look around, all I ever done
I'm a motherfuckin' thug, thug thug, all I ever was
Look around

I'm a motherfuckin' thug

Overall Meaning

The song "Thuggin'" by Glasses Malone is a commentary on societal expectations of black men and how those expectations contribute to the thug stereotype. The song's opening lines, "The only way I've been practicing my whole life to live my life / Is to be responsible for what I do" suggest that the singer has been taught to take responsibility for their actions. However, the following lines, "I don't know how to be responsible / For what every black male did" suggest that society expects all black men to act in a certain way, and that the singer resists these expectations. The singer goes on to proudly declare themselves a thug, stating that they came from the gutter and are still here, living on their own terms. They express their dislike of paying taxes and their desire to sleep with famous actresses, declaring that they will take what they want and do what they want, unlike those who do what they can. Throughout the song, the singer asserts their masculinity and independence, and challenges societal expectations of them as a black man.

The song also touches on issues such as police brutality, black-on-black crime, and media representation of black men. The line "Nigga, fuck George Zimmerman / How it's pistol versus hand?" references the killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012, which was carried out by George Zimmerman. The song criticizes rappers who talk tough but don't take action against injustice, and questions why more isn't being done to address issues affecting the black community. The line "Sometimes I look in the mirror and ask myself what I'm scared of / How dare the media portray me this way" suggests that the singer feels frustrated and misunderstood by how the media portrays black men. Overall, the song is a defiant statement of identity and resistance against societal expectations of black men.

ATTN: My white friends. This song is not about the glorification of what you would deem 'thug culture'. It is, rather, using the term 'thug' in the same sense that mainstream media uses the term, which is to refer to all black people, especially those who are impoverished and lack proper avenues for higher education and career advancement. Kendrick is not literally attacking your wife with a .44 pistol and a bottle of malt liquor. He is attacking your perception of what it means to be black, which is what you value most. The repetition of the phrase "I'm a thug" is used ironically. It is using the media's loaded language to say "I am a black person." It's supposed to make you think about the term thug and how it related to the experience of being black and having the image of blackness as portrayed by the media thrust upon you.

@TheCarnivore5247

Denshuu As a white friend, I like your message, butit does have something of a patronizing tone. I think multiple races and creeds could hear this and take it the wrong way, art works that way at times. But I completely agree with your take. I personally hope everyone gets the irony of the message and hears the desperation to be heard based on their individual views and not on mass public generalizations. One Love sir, thank you for your message.

@Mohamedbloo

Your acting a bit condescending towards white people dude. I'm black and didn't get it. Thanks for explaining tho.
