Majour
Glassjaw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You only get one taste
And for this gift we are graced.
You only get one taste
And for this gift
Wait.

Now let me go
So I can brag about the gifts that he stole.
(Thank you) For all the lonely nights.
I will carry this with me where I go.

Bad taste in my mouth.
You would think I'm a whore.
Bad taste in my mouth.
You would think I'm you.

You only get on taste
And for this gift we are graced.
You only get one taste
And for this gift

She's likely to go,
Or so she'll say.
We sleep as we do to keep our nights days away.
Love,

Or so she'll say.
Immature love.
You breed immature lust.

So died the virgin.
I have told you before,
You we're nothing special to him
(And that's just another thing that's nothing new for you).

You'll be born.
You before.

Embody me
With you body.
I've never seen it.
I have never.

Embody me
With your body.

I've never seen it.
Are you happy?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Glassjaw's song "Majour" seem to portray a sense of bitterness and deception. The repetition of "You only get one taste, and for this gift, we are graced" could be interpreted as someone who has given their all to a relationship, but that commitment was not reciprocated equally. There is an element of regret in the lyrics, wishing they had not given as much as they did. The following line, "Now let me go, so I can brag about the gifts that he stole" speaks to a feeling of betrayal. The singer is glad to be rid of the relationship, but they still feel hurt by the actions of the other person. The words "thank you" for all the lonely nights could either be sarcastic or earnest gratitude for the experience, depending on the interpretation.

The following lines, "Bad taste in my mouth. You would think I'm a whore. Bad taste in my mouth. You would think I'm you" are a direct reference to their former partner. They feel as though their partner has tainted them, that they have absorbed something negative from their relationship, and that they are seen in a negative light by association. The next few lines, "She's likely to go, or so she'll say. We sleep as we do to keep our nights days away. Love, or so she'll say. Immature love. You breed immature lust." imply a sense of distrust towards women, and a frustration at what is perceived as immature behavior. The singer is still not over the relationship, still thinking about it and perhaps still has feelings for the partner.

The final component of the lyrics, "So died the virgin. I have told you before, You were nothing special to him (And that's just another thing that's nothing new for you). You'll be born. You before. Embody me with your body. I've never seen it. I have never. Embody me with your body. Are you happy?" is somewhat ambiguous, but seems to imply some kind of sexual encounter that the singer has had with someone else. There is a sense of confusion and perhaps shame, with the line "So died the virgin" implying that a part of themselves was lost. The final line, "Are you happy?" may be directed at the partner, questioning whether they are content with their transgressions. Overall, the song seems to speak to feelings of hurt and betrayal in a past relationship, and a sense of lingering sadness and regret.
