Tip Your Bartender
Glassjaw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hit it one more time for our men in uniform
(with a price upon their heads)
This is a war! Sober up!
call it what you want, the color changes
up in the sun.

Not throwing stones at you anymore.
Your name's in lights and I don't wonder anymore.
Anymore.

All my X's live with hexes
This is why I hang myself with jealousy
upon a fencepost half-mast.
Fashion: war between the guilty and the guilty
and the guilty and the guilty and the teen.

Not throwing stones at you anymore.
Your name's in lights and I don't wonder anymore.
Anymore.

Oh yeah, I would like to..kneel down like mice do.
As I'm crying in the beer of a drunkman.
And it's rotted, rotted, rotted!

Not throwing stones at you anymore.
Your name's in lights and I don't wonder anymore.
Anymore.

Oh yeah, I would like to..
I'd like to die like fucking mice do.
As I'm crying in the beer of a drunkman.
And I'm crying in the beer of a drunkman.
Fashion.
Fashion.
Buy it.

Load it.
Shoot it.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Glassjaw's song Tip Your Bartender seem to be a commentary on war and the ways it impacts individuals and society. The lines "Hit it one more time for our men in uniform/ (with a price upon their heads)/This is a war! Sober up!/call it what you want, the color changes/up in the sun." suggest a call to arms for servicemen and the need for vigilance in times of war. However, the lines "Not throwing stones at you anymore./Your name's in lights and I don't wonder anymore./Anymore." seem to indicate a recognition that the cost of war includes both physical and psychological harm, as well as the inevitable deaths of those who serve.

The song takes a turn in the second verse when the lyrics "All my X's live with hexes/This is why I hang myself with jealousy/upon a fencepost half-mast./Fashion: war between the guilty and the guilty/and the guilty and the guilty and the teen." suggest a personal struggle with envy and self-hatred. The line "Fashion: war between the guilty and the guilty" could also be read as a critique of the fashion industry and the ways in which it perpetuates divisions between people.

The chorus repeats the refrain "Not throwing stones at you anymore./Your name's in lights and I don't wonder anymore./Anymore." which could be understood as a declaration of forgiveness or a sense of closure in a relationship.

Speaking as a bartender, I must say, I agree with the message this song is putting fourth to the public.

vahnn0

I'm not quite sure the message implied by the song title is the same as the message in the lyrics.

Marcus Biller

It's a sxe song, dude. You know, the thing that will bring you out of business?

Brandon Taylor

@vahnn0 Sarcasm?... Shit, makes even more sense because any solid bartender is sarcastic. We don't give af about your life stories when you sit down but we sarcastically humor the drunks because it's how we get paid lol
