Demons
Glasslands Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We live to appease
Entire generations blind to this cultural disease
They cover our own eyes
They bind our hands until we cry for more
Then throw us to the wolves

This is a war for our souls; just let, just let go
I will not forget
The Demons that you are
I will not forget
The Demons that you are

There isn't one who can go without blame
Our whole world lives and dies just to gain

This is a war for our souls; just let, just let go

I will not forget
The Demons that you are
I will not forget
The Demons that you are

Take a look at your life
Leave the empty, set yourself free
You are more than the scars on your heart
So step away and become who you're born to be
Set yourself free

I will not forget
The Demons that you are...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Glasslands’ song Demons explore the idea of a cultural disease that is passed down from generation to generation. The first line "We live to appease" sets the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting how we allow the opinions and ideals of others to dictate our own lives. The second line suggests that we are blind to this ‘disease’ as it has been ingrained in us since birth. The third line "They cover our own eyes" further confirms this idea of blindness, suggesting that we are unaware of our own actions and the impact it has on ourselves and others.

The next line “They bind our hands until we cry for more” speaks to the idea that we are controlled by external forces, ultimately leading us to a breaking point where we beg for more, before we are “thrown to the wolves”. The chorus of the song is rather ominous, with the repetition of “I will not forget the Demons that you are.” This further amplifies the idea of how these external forces have a hold on us, leaving a lasting impact that we cannot forget.

The latter part of the song urges the listener to take a step back and reflect on their own life, pushing them to leave behind the ‘empty’ things that have been weighing them down, and focus on the things that matter. The lyrics suggest that we are more than just the scars on our heart, and to “step away and become who you’re born to be”. The song ends with the eerie repetition of the chorus, leaving the listener with a sense of unease and introspection.

I am still getting goosebumps just thinking about this song hours after I last listened to it! This goes down as one of only four songs so far that I will forever remember hearing for the first time that had me totally frozen in state of emotional audio nirvana while time kind of just stood still!

I have eternal thanks to give to Pandora for leading me to the promise land with you guys while listening to a station that I had created with The Plot in You - Feel Nothing as the starting inspiration. I have spun through most of your other songs now, and I have not found a single thing that I would consider just mediocre for my preferences yet. The stuff you guys are putting out is just epic! I hope you guys never stop and only continue to get better and bigger while having a whole lot of fun along the way.

I am definitely going to be buying up all of your music and supporting you however I can. I really hope you wind up making it down to Houston one day so I can see you live. I don’t do facebook, but I do have an active thread going on the Fractal Audio forums regarding new music discovery and I give you guys a proper shout out over there.

It is a really fun time for me right now. I just got back in the game of new music discovery after putting that on pause for the most part since ~2010. There were a few gateway songs that recently opened my eyes to the post-hardcore and melodic metalcore world that I have been missing out on. I hope I’ll be able to find more stuff that is similar and as good as what you guys have been doing.

BTW this is probably only my second comment on YouTube. I could not hold back. Good luck on your journey!
