It's Not Right But It's Okay
Glee/Blaine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Friday night you and your boys went out to eat
Then they hung out but you came home around three, yes you did
If six of y'all went out then four of you were really cheap
'Cause only two of you had dinner, I found your credit card receipt

It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
Don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah

I'll pack your bags so you can leave town for a week, yes I am
The phone rings and then you look at me
You said it was one of your friends down on Fifty-fourth St. boy
So why did two one three show up on your caller I.D.

It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
Don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah

I've been through all of this before (I've been through all this before)
So how could you think (don't think about me, don't think about it)
That I would stand around and take some more (get going, get gone)
Things are gonna change (things are gonna change baby)
'Cause I won't be a fool anymore (you don't stand no chance boy)
That's why you have to leave (I said yeah)
So don't turn around to see my face (don't you turn around)
There's no more tears left here for you to see
Was it really worth you going out like that, tell me

Was it really worth you going out like that
See I'm moving on
And I refuse to turn back, yeah
See all of this time
I thought I had somebody down for me
It turns out you were making a fool of me

It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway
Pack your bags up and leave
Don't you dare come running back to me
It's not right but it's okay
I'm gonna make it anyway

Close the door behind you, leave your key
I'd rather be alone than unhappy, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "It's Not Right But It's Okay" are about a woman who has just found out that her partner has been cheating on her. She discovered the evidence of his infidelity, and confronted him about it. She tells him she knows that he has been unfaithful, and then expresses that although it's not right what he did, she's going to be okay. She tells him to pack his bags and leave and not to come back. She decides that she would rather be alone and happy than stay with someone who betrayed her trust.

The chorus repeats the line "It's not right but it's okay," which is a clever play on words. The woman acknowledges that what her partner did was wrong, but she has accepted that she needs to move on with her life. She is going to make it on her own without him, and she doesn't need a man to be happy.

Through the lyrics, the woman wants her partner to know that he is not irreplaceable, and that she will not be a fool for him anymore. She has realized that she deserves better and that he is not worth her time. She's not going to cry anymore, and she won't let him see any more tears.

The song was originally performed by Whitney Houston in 1999, but the Glee cover by Blaine Anderson (played by Darren Criss) became very popular among the show's fans. The song has a strong beat and is very empowering for anyone who has ever been cheated on or betrayed.

The entire club is out here singing back up as if they don’t cheat on each other every damn week

@omarcogle1965

Tina, Artie and Mike never cheated.

@cynthiaanderson6410

@@omarcogle1965 but they’ve helped people cheat before (the Quinn thing) and that means they still can’t talk

@omarcogle1965

@@cynthiaanderson6410 True, but those 3 never helped anyone cheat. Tina broke up with Artie, then dated Mike, Santana helped Brittany cheat on Artie, Finn help Quinn cheat on Sam, Rachel cheated on Finn with Puck, Sam helped Mercedes cheat on Shane, Puck helped Quinn cheat on Finn, and you know the rest.
