The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
Girl don't play the fool--no
You're the one givin' up the love
Anytime he needs it
But you turn your back and then he's off and runnin' with the crowd
Anything to please him
Do you really think he thinks about you when he's out
He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's been tellin' lies
He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Oh oh oh
Girl don't play the fool, no
It was only late last night
He was out there sneakin'
Then he called you up to check that you were waiting by the phone
All the world's a candy store
He's been trick or treatin'
When it comes to true love girl with him there's no one home
He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
Oh oh oh
He's been tellin' lies
He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Oh oh oh
Girl don't play the fool, no
You could find somebody better girl
He's c-cold as ice
As cold as ice
He’s cold as ice
He’s cold as ice
Stay away from him girl
C-c-c-cold hearted uh, ah, ah
C-c-c-cold hearted sssnake
C-c-c-cold hearted uh, ah, ah
C-c-c-cold hearted sssnake
He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes

Look into his eyes

Cold-hearted snake

He's a cold-hearted snake
The song, "Cold-Hearted" by Paula Abdul, tells a story of a girl who falls for a man who is not really interested in her. The lyrics speak to the woman who has been giving her all to a man that doesn't reciprocate the love she has for him. The song encourages the listener to not give up on themselves and find someone better.
The chorus, "He's a cold-hearted snake, Look into his eyes, Oh oh oh, He's been telling lies" serves as a warning to the woman that the man she is with is only playing games and will not bring her any true happiness. The line, "All the world's a candy store, He's been trick or treating" means that the man is enjoying all of the attention and love that the woman is giving him without any intention of reciprocating it.
The song can be seen as a call to action for women to recognize their self-worth and not settle for someone who doesn't treat them right. It serves as a reminder that staying with someone who doesn't value you is not worth it in the long run.
