The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

I see ya blowin' me a kiss
It doesn't take a scientist
To understand what's going on baby
If you see something in my eye
Let's not over-analyze
Don't go too deep with it baby (baby)
So it'll be, what it'll be
Don't make a fuss and get crazy over you and me
Here's what I'll do
I'll play loose
Not like we have a date with destiny
It's just (aah) a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just (aah) some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do, depends on you
Sha-la-la-la, sha-la-la-la
It's raising my adrenaline
You're banging on a heart of tin
Please don't make too much of it baby
Say the word "forever more"
That's not what I'm looking for
All I can commit to is "maybe"
So it'll be what it'll be
Don't make a fuss and get crazy over you and me (crazy over you and me)
Here's what I'll do
I'll play loose
Not like we have a date with destiny (Ooh ooh)
It's just (aah) a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just (aah) some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do depends on you
Sha-la-la-la, sha-la-la-la
Vanilla skies
White picket fences in your eyes
A vision of you and me
It's just (aah) a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just (aah) some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do (everything I do) depends on you
Sha-la-la-la (ah hey yeah yeah)
Sha-la-la-la
Sha-la-la-la (oh babe not like everything I do depends on you)
Sha-la-la-la
Sha-la-la-la (ah hey yeah yeah)
Sha-la-la-la
The lyrics of the Glee Cast's "Crush" speak of a one-sided infatuation towards someone, with the singer blowing a kiss and receiving a signal from the other person that they understand what's going on. However, the singer warns not to over-analyze the situation and take it too seriously, preferring to just go with the flow and not make a big deal out of it. They even mention that they're not looking for a forever commitment, only a "maybe."
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "a little crush," emphasizing that the attraction is not a big deal to the singer, as the physical effects of the attraction such as adrenaline rushes are outlined. The phrase "not like I faint every time we touch" reinforces the casual nature of the crush, and the singer reminds themselves that they are not dependent on this person for their every action.
The bridge of the song describes a dreamlike vision, including "vanilla skies" and "white picket fences" in someone's eyes. This could tie in with the theme of the simple and idyllic nature of a crush, only to be admired from afar without intense complications.
Overall, the lyrics of "Crush" convey the familiar feeling of having a harmless crush and the reluctance to take things more seriously or get one's hopes up. It's a catchy and well-written pop song that captures the relatable feeling of a crush.
