The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Don't make me over
Now that I'd do anything for you
Don't make me over
Now that you know how I adore you
Don't pick on the things I say, the things I do
I'm begging you
Don't make me over
Now that I can't make it without you
Don't make me over
I wouldn't change one thing about you
Just take me inside your arms and hold me tight
And always be by my side, if I am wrong or right
I'm begging you
Don't make me over (oh ah)
Don't make me over (ah)
Now that you've got me at your command (ah oh)
Accept me for what I am (ooh ah)
Accept me for the things that I do (ooh ah)
Accept me for what I am (oh ah)
Accept me for the things that I do (oh ah)
Now that I'd can't make it without you
I wouldn't change one thing about you
Just take me inside your arms and hold me tight
And always be by my side, if I am wrong or right
I'm begging you
Don't make me over (ooh ah)
Don't make me over (ah)
Now that you've got me at your command (ah oh)
Accept me for what I am (oh ah)
Accept me for the things that I do (oh ah)
Accept me for what I am (oh ah)
Accept me for the things that I do (oh ah)
The lyrics of "Don't Make Me Over" by Glee Cast speak of a plea to a lover not to change the singer, even with all their faults. The singer asks to be accepted for who they are, just as they accept their lover with all their imperfections. They express how they would do anything for the person they love, and they hope their partner will reciprocate that love by accepting them fully.
The song's title and chorus are a reference to the practice of getting a makeover or changing one's appearance to fit society's standards of beauty or acceptability. The song's lyrics express how the singer does not want their lover to try and change them and wishes to be accepted for exactly who they are. The song's melody has an upbeat tempo with a classic Motown sound, bringing a joyful feel to the song.
Overall, the song's message is one of love, acceptance, and embracing one's natural self, faults and all. It encourages the listener to celebrate their individuality and to accept others for who they are, flaws included.
