The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important β the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Yeah, she's a triflin' friend indeed
Ooh she's a gold digger, way over time
That digs on me
(She give me money)
Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger
(When I'm in need)
(She give me money)
Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger
(When I'm in need)
But she ain't messin' wit no broke, broke
(I gotta leave)
Get down girl, go 'head get down
(I gotta leave)
Get down girl, go 'head get down
(I gotta leave)
Get down girl, go 'head get down
(I gotta leave)
Get down girl, go 'head
(She give me money)
Cutie da bomb
Met her at a beauty salon
(When I'm in need)
With a baby Louis Vuitton
Under her under arm
(She give me money)
She said I can tell you rock
I can tell by ya charm
(When I'm in need)
Far as girls you got a flock
I can tell by ya charm and ya arm
(I gotta leave)
But I'm lookin' for the one
Have you seen her?
(I gotta leave)
(No we ain't seen her!)
(She give me money)
Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger
(When I'm in need)
But she ain't messin' wit no broke, broke
(She give me money)
Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger
(When I'm in need)
But she ain't messin' with no broke, broke

Get down girl, go 'head get down

(She give me money)
18 years, 18 years
(When I'm in need)
She got one of yo kids, got you for 18 years
(She give me money)
I know somebody payin' child support for one of his kids
(When I'm in need)
His baby momma's car crib is bigger than his
(I gotta leave)

(I gotta leave)

(I gotta leave)

The Glee cast's version of "Gold Digger" is a cover of Kanye West's 2005 single. The song is all about money-loving women and how they will do anything to get their hands on a wealthy man's money. The lyrics suggest that the woman referred to as a "gold digger" is only interested in the singer's financial status, as she never sticks around when he is broke or in debt. The opening lines of the song "She takes my money when I'm in need. Yeah, she's a trifling friend indeed" indicate a parasitical relationship, which is based primarily on the woman's financial gain.
The chorus of "Gold Digger" is a call-and-response between the male narrator and an unidentified female speaker. The lyrics are sarcastic and humorous, as the woman denies that she is a gold digger. The line "Now I ain't saying she a gold digger, but she ain't messing with no broke, broke" implies that while she may not openly admit to being a gold digger, the woman definitely has standards when it comes to a man's financial status. The song has a catchy beat and incorporates several musical samples, including Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman." Ultimately, "Gold Digger" is a fun, upbeat, and critical look at the topic of gold digging and the role money plays in relationships.
