The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Halo / Walking on Sunshine
Glee Cast Lyrics

Ohh, remember those walls I built?
Well, baby they're tumblin' down
They didn't even put up a fight
They didn't even make a sound
It's like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breakin'
It's the risk that I'm takin'
New Directions girls:
Everywhere I'm looking now
I'm surrounded by your embrace
Baby I can see your halo
You know you're my saving grace (I'm walking on sunshine)
You're everything I need and more (Wooah)
It's written all over your face (I'm walking on sunshine)
Baby, I can feel your halo (Wooah)
And don't it feel good!
I can feel your halo, halo, halo
I can see your halo, halo, halo
I can feel your halo, halo, halo (I'm walking on sunshine)
I can see your halo, halo (Wooah)
And don't it feel good!
I used to think maybe you loved me
Now baby, I'm sure
And I just cant wait 'til the day
When you knock on my door
Oh now, now
I'm walking on sunshine, wooah
I'm walking on sunshine, wooah
I'm walking on sunshine, wooah
And don't it feel good!
I can feel your halo, halo, halo (Mercedes: Alright now)
I can feel your halo, halo, halo (Mercedes: Oh yeah)
I can feel your halo, halo, halo (Rachel: Halo)
I can feel your halo, halo, halo (Mercedes: Halo)
Rachel:
I can see your halo...
HALO!
The Glee version of Beyoncé's "Halo" is largely about the sensation of falling in love and being completely consumed by the other person. The first verse sees Rachel singing about how her walls have been broken down and how she can't resist the pull of the romance she's experiencing. She sings about the risk she's taking by being so vulnerable, but that she's willing to keep going anyway. The second verse, sung by the New Directions girls, speaks about how they're completely surrounded by love and the person they're falling for is their saving grace. They declare that they can see the person's halo and that it's written all over their face, indicating that this person is special and pure. The chorus is the most powerful part of the song and involves the girls interacting with Rachel's lead. They sing together about how they can feel the person's halo around them, and that it feels good to be so in love.
Overall, the Glee version of "Halo" is a declaration of love that speaks to the idea of being completely absorbed by someone else, which can be simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating. The experiences of the characters, as well as the vocal delivery by the cast, give the song a strong emotional impact, emphasizing the power of love.
