The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Aww tick tock, you don't stop... (Stop to the—)
Aww tick tock, you don't stop... (Stop to the—)
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
(Ohhh...) "I know you're not gonna sing that song!"
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
(Ohhh...) "I know you're not gonna sing that song!"
Come inside, take off your coat, I'll make you feel at home
Now let's pour a glass of wine, 'cause now we're all alone
I've been waiting all night, so just let me hold you close to me
'Cause I've been dyin' for you, girl, to make love to me
Puck:
(Ohhh...) Girl, you know it feels real good
(Ohhh...) We can do it 'til we both wake up
Finn:
(Ohhh...) Girl, you know I'm hooked on you
Will:
(Ohhh...) And this is what I'll do...
Sandy:
"I know you're not gonna sing that song!"
Acafellas:
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
I wanna sex you up!
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
All night, I want to rub you down
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
I wanna sex you up!
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
Puck:
Let me take off all your clothes
Disconnect the phone so nobody knows, yeah
Let me light a candle so that we can make it better
Makin' love until we drown, yeah
(Ohhh...) Girl, you know it feels real good
(Ohhh...) We can do it 'til we both wake up
Finn:
(Ohhh...) Girl, you know I'm hooked on you
Will:
(Ohhh...) And this is what I'll do...
Sandy:
"I know you're not gonna sing that song!"
(Ohhh...) (Aww tick tock, you don't stop...)
Acafellas:
I wanna sex you up!
The Glee cast's version of the song "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd was performed in the fourth episode of the first season of the series. In the show, the song is performed by the Acafellas, which is an all-male group composed of Will, Finn, Puck, and Sandy. Sandy is a former teacher who has a creepy, sexual crush on the male members of the group. In the song, each member sings a verse about wanting to have sex with a girl. The melody and the rhythm are upbeat and catchy, but the lyrics convey a sexually explicit and aggressive message, which contrasts with the naïve nature of the show. Sandy interrupts the song several times to complain that they cannot sing such a song in a school environment.
The Glee cast's cover of "I Wanna Sex You Up" served as a reminder of the popularity of the original version by Color Me Badd, which was released in 1991. The song was part of the New Jack Swing movement, a genre that combined R&B, hip hop, and funk elements. The song became an instant hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and establishing the band as a one-hit-wonder. The song garnered both praise and criticism for its sexually explicit lyrics, which were considered controversial for the time. Since then, the song has been covered and parodied by many artists and programs.
