The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm beggin' of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of golden hair
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
He talks about you in his sleep
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene
And I could easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him even though you can
Jolene (Jolene) Jolene
The song "Jolene" by Dolly Parton has been covered by many artists and the Glee cast version adds a unique interpretation to the track. The lyrics tell the story of Shannon pleading to Jolene not to take her man because of Jolene's captivating beauty. Shannon acknowledges Jolene's beauty with lines such as "Your beauty is beyond compare" and "With flaming locks of golden hair" but still pleads with Jolene not to take her man. Shannon's desperation shows through lines such as "And I cannot compete with you, Jolene" and "But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene." She recognizes that Jolene could easily take her man but is hoping that Jolene will choose not to.
The song's chorus is a powerful plea for Jolene not to take Shannon's man, even if she is capable of doing so. The repetition of Jolene's name in the chorus adds emphasis to the desperation in Shannon's plea. The song's instrumentation is minimalistic, featuring mainly acoustic guitar and drums which add to the emotional weight of the song. The Glee cast's harmonies add a layer of depth to the song, creating a haunting and melancholic tone that highlights Shannon's desperation.

Dolly's voice was sweet and savoury of envy in Jolene so it was nice hearing this version because it's so sorrowful and heartfelt
