The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Le Jazz Hot
Glee Cast Lyrics

'Bout twenty years ago way down in New Orleans
A group of fellas found a new kind of music
And they decided to call it...jazz!
No other sound has what this music has
Before they new it, it was whizzin' 'round the world
The world was ready for a blue kind of music
And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz
Oh baby, won't you play me
Le Jazz Hot, maybe?
And don't ever let it end
I tell ya, friend, it's really somethin' to hear
I can't sit still when there's that rhythm near me
Also, baby
Le Jazz Hot may be
What's holdin' my soul together
Don't know whether it's mornin' or night
Only know it's soundin' right
So come on in and play me
Le Jazz Hot, baby
'Cause I love my jazz...hot!
Before they new it, it was whizzin' 'round the world
The world was ready for a blue kind of music
And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz
When you play me
Le Jazz Hot, baby
You're holdin' my soul together
Don't know whether it's mornin' or night
Only know it's soundin' right
So come on in and play me
Le Jazz Hot, baby
'Cause I love my jazz...hot!
Le...Jazz...Hooooot...!
Le Jazz Hot!
The song "Le Jazz Hot" is a tribute to the jazz music genre, which has been integral to American culture for over a century. The song is set in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and the lyrics describe the origins of this popular music genre. The opening lines of the song mention a group of people who discovered a new type of music and named it jazz, which became a sensation across the world. The singer expresses his love for this genre and how it holds his soul together, and he asks the musicians to play "Le Jazz Hot" to keep the rhythm alive.
The use of the term "Le Jazz Hot" in the title of the song is a reference to the French influence on jazz music. Jazz originated in African-American communities in New Orleans, but it was also popularized by African-American musicians who performed in Paris and other European cities during the 1920s and 1930s. The combination of African and European musical traditions created a unique sound that came to be known as jazz.
The song is performed by the character Kurt in the TV show Glee, and it features a vibrant arrangement with horns, drums, and piano. The lively melody and rhythm of the song capture the energy and excitement of jazz, and the lyrics pay tribute to the musicians who created this iconic music genre.
