It focused on a high school show choir, also known as a glee club, set within the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio.

Glee featured multiple major and secondary roles who have contributed vocals to the show: Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Mark Salling, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Jayma Mays, Jane Lynch, Chord Overstreet, Darren Criss, Harry Shum, Jr., Damian McGinty, Vanessa Lengies, Samuel Larsen, Blake Jenner, Alex Newell, Melissa Benoist, Jacob Artist, and Dean Geyer. Numerous special guests have also featured on tracks, including Jonathan Groff, Kristin Chenoweth, Grant Gustin, Olivia Newton-John, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, Idina Menzel, Charice, Gwyneth Paltrow, k.d. lang, Ricky Martin, Matt Bomer, Kate Hudson, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

The pilot episode of the show was broadcast on May 19, 2009 and the first season began airing on September 9, 2009. The show was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy selects all music featured within the series himself, with the intent of maintaining a balance between show tunes and chart hits. Songs featured on the show are available for digital download through iTunes up to two weeks before new episodes air, and through other digital outlets and mobile carriers a week later.

Their debut single, "Don't Stop Believin'", a cover of the 1981 Journey song, was a top ten hit, and was certified platinum in Australia and gold in the US. The group's cover of The All-American Rejects' "Gives You Hell" reached number one in Ireland, giving them their first number one single.

The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".

The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."

Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

This was one of the best cover on Glee and i will never understand why the writers decided to do what they did with this couple. Jake cheating was really out of character for all of what they went through and completely ruined his character development.

Even after all these years, I still find this to be such a beautiful and moving performance. Jacob has an amazing, soulful and powerful voice as a singer and this is truly a wonderful cover of the original, one of my favorite covers ever on the show. He sung this beautifully. Jake/Marley had such a meaningful, heartfelt, beautiful and endearing relationship in Season 4. I really felt the connection and love between them. I thought Jacob and Melissa had amazing on-screen chemistry and sold Jake & Marley's love story beautifully. I will always be disappointed and bitter w/ how the writers destroyed Jarley in Season 5 in such a contrived and lazy manner all for plot-driven reasons. They not only threw away/destroyed Jake's character growth, they threw away/destroyed the wonderful progression of Jake and Marley's relationship carelessly as if everything they went through together meant nothing.

Yeah. When I think of the line from the song, "I can see the pain behind your eyes, it's been there for quite a while" and then you see Marley smile wistfully with a look of sadness in her eyes, it's very telling. There was a deeper meaning and truth to those words than anyone could have realized. No one knew what Melissa was going through and what she suffered. But thankfully she came out on the other side as a survivor and now she knows what real love and true joy is. She is incredibly brave, strong and a true inspiration.

@Fronk Yeah that's so true and it's very telling considering what actually happened. When you watch this performance and look at Melissa in this scene, it's like she's drawing from her real life experience (some actors use "method acting" as a way to make the scene realistic and believable but in this case it's definitely a little too close to home knowing what happened). You're right she didn't really need to act as the emotions she's displaying was already there. She could channel and convey her true feelings through her character and that's what makes this scene so poignant yet heartbreaking because it hits you in a different way emotionally now.

I will always be bitter that they destroyed Jarley and carelessly threw away their relationship like it meant nothing. The way they built up their relationship in Season 4 was beautiful. We saw Jake grew as a character and he genuinely loved Marley. Sure their relationship wasn't perfect but what they shared was meaningful, sincere and good before it was destroyed the following season. Of course I don't tolerate cheating and I felt Marley made a healthy choice to end it and put herself and well-being first. Not many female characters do that and it was one of the reasons why I loved Marley as a character. That being said, I was more disappointed w/ how the writers handled Jarley's relationship in Season 5 and it felt more plot-driven, contrived and lazy writing than anything else. And I was disappointed that they put Ryley together so soon after the breakup as I thought they should've let Marley be single for a while.

I honestly wished that Jarley would've been endgame after much needed character growth from both characters (especially Jake). They could've start fresh by rebuilding a friendship first and for Jake to earn her trust again. They could've took that relationship slow and build it up organically to the point where if they got back together, it would've been more meaningful. They could've left it open-ended when they graduated and stayed friends but then 5 years later, we would see them reunited and happily married or something. For me, I felt they were the true love story out of the next generation of the Glee members. Like you, I always felt the love and passion between them. They literally had it: amazing chemistry, great story potential, beautiful development/buildup, a strong and genuine connection. The writers dropped the ball on Jarley as there was so much potential and possibilities from a story angle to tell for them. Jarley just had that connection and "lightning in a bottle" type of chemistry that was undeniable from the start and that was all due to Jacob and Melissa who worked so well together on-screen (acting/musically-wise). Chemistry is subjective. Either it's there or it's not. Jarley had it in spades. It wasn't forced, it was natural. They just had it. The writers really screwed up when they broke them up and in such a contrived, messed up way. The only good thing that came out of that breakup was Melissa and Jacob's compelling and heartbreaking performance in that scene, especially Melissa who absolutely KILLED it. But that's no surprise as even back then Melissa showed how much potential she has as an actress and she's a PHENOMENAL and INCREDIBLE one, especially now.

I wanted them to get the same chance everyone else got tbh I felt closer to that cast mainly because I felt the ogs were grown and moving on. Lol I’m not s4 cast age not even now but idk they looked more high school like in my eyes but tbh I think glee could have had 8+ seasons or a spin off if they really truly gave them a chance. This hits heavy in a different way. I've always had self-doubt issues, but when I got into a relationship for the first time, she would play this song saying she would. But then she started saying that I needed therapy and I wasnt ready for a relationship. Obviously I'm learning to love myself a lot more, but in order to do that I need to accept that me doubting myself is who I am. She couldn't see that, and even if she didnt mean to, it made me feel like I was broken and desperately needed fixing. But change takes time and this song perfectly encapsulates that, which is why I'm so grateful for the friends I have as I know how rare patient and accepting friends are, and I want to give them the same patience that they've given someone like me.

I wonder if Melissa had an easier time acting during this part given what she’d gone through. And to know she filmed this, and heard the message of this song, before Blake threw the phone at her so hard he damaged her eye permanently (and was the awakening she needed to leave) is so heart wrenching. I’m so so happy she’s now in a happy marriage and is living her best life. Nobody else deserves happiness more than her. ❤️❤️

Will forever be mad at the writer for making Jake cheat... he was clearly becoming a better person and they ruined it out of nowhere. This was literally one of the most heartfelt dedications on the entire show.

Blake Jenner (Ryder's actor) is who you should be mad at. This was his idea, as he was dating Marley's actress, and he didn't like that her character was dating someone else on screen. Honestly, it was a blessing in disguise that the show moved to NY soon after, because I think their original plan was to have Marley and Ryder get together afterwards, but once they decided to move the show to NY, they felt it wasn't necessary to have them become a couple.

I'm not really a fan of Marley's character, she just never really hit off for me, but damm I'm so glad she got this song sung to her. I have completely forgotten this part of the storyline for them (it may be her eating disorder idk) but whatever it was, you can really tell it meant a lot to her though. And Becca was so funny in this as well lol. Jacob has a great voice! Definitely my favourite cover from gen2
