The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

If God had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to His face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
Finn with New Directions
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Rachel with New Directions
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home
Trying to make His way home
Kurt with Quinn
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see?
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the Saints
And all the Prophets
Finn with New Directions
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mercedes & Rachel with New Directions
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home
Trying to make His way home
Back up to Heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
Finn & Rachel with New Directions
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Mercedes & Rachel with New Directions
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home
Just tryin' to make His way home
Just like a holy rolling stone
Back up to Heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make His way home
New Directions (Tina)
Yeah, yeah, God is great (Nobody callin' on the phone)
Yeah, yeah, God is good ('Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome)
Yeah, yeah, yeah...
The song "One of Us" by Glee Cast is a soulful tune that asks questions about the nature of God and faith. The first verse is sung by Tina, who asks the listener to consider what God's name would be and whether they would confront Him with a question in person. Meanwhile, Finn interjects with a refrain, affirming that "God is great" and "God is good". Rachel then poses the song's central question: "What if God was one of us?", describing Him as "just a slob like one of us" and "just a stranger on the bus". She continues to ask listeners to imagine God simply trying to make His way back home, just like anyone else.
The question of God's humanity is then carried forward by Kurt, who wonders what God would look like if He had a face, and if seeing Him would make the listener believe in Heaven and in Jesus and the Saints. Rachel and Mercedes join in for the chorus, asking once again what it would be like if God were one of us. The song ends with a final refrain from the group, affirming that God is great and good.
Overall, the song seeks to bridge the gap between God and humanity, asking listeners to consider what it would be like if divinity were more accessible and relatable. It poses tough questions about faith while maintaining a sense of hope and wonder.
