The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Two, one two three!
Sam
Now, red solo cup is the best receptacle
For barbecues, tailgates, fairs and festivals
And you, sir, do not have a pair of testicles
If you prefer drinkin' from glass (Mike: That's true!)
And in fourteen years they are decomposable
And unlike my home, they are not foreclosable
Freddie Mac can kiss my ass, woo!
Red solo cup, uh huh, I fill you up
Let's have a party, let's have a party
I love you, red solo cup, I lift you up
Proceed to party, proceed to party
Now, I really love how you're easy to stack
But I really hate how you're easy to crack
'Cause when beer runs down the front of my back
Well, that, my friends, is quite yucky
But I have to admit that the ladies get smitten
Admirin' how sharply my first name is written
On you with a Sharpie when I get to hittin'
On them to help me get lucky
Red solo cup, I fill you up
Let's have a party, let's have a party
I love you, red solo cup, I lift you up
Proceed to party, proceed to party
Now, I've seen you in blue and I've seen you in yellow
But only you, red, will do for this fellow
'Cause you are the Abbott into my Costello
And you are the Fruit to my Loom
Red solo cup, you're more than just plastic
You're more than amazing, you're more than fantastic
Believe me when I'm not the least bit sarcastic
When I look at you and say:
"Red solo cup...
You're not just a cup (Quinn: Mm, mm)
(Finn: God no!)
You're my... (Finn: Friend?)
You're my friend, yeah (Finn: Lifelong!)
(Quinn: You're my friend, uh huh)
Thank you for being my friend"
Red solo cup, I fill you up
Let's have a party, let's have a party
I love you, red solo cup (Finn: What up, what up)
I lift you up
Proceed to party, proceed to party
Red solo cup, I fill you up
Let's have a party, let's have a party
Red solo cup, I lift you up
Let's have a party, proceed to party
Solo cup, solo cup
Solo cup, solo cup
Solo cup, solo cup
Solo cup
The Glee Cast's song "Red Solo Cup" celebrates the iconic plastic party cup that has come to symbolize good times with friends. The song's lyrics emphasize the practicality of the cup, with lines like "Now, red solo cup is the best receptacle for barbecues, tailgates, fairs, and festivals," and "Red solo cup is cheap and disposable/And in fourteen years they are decomposable." However, the song also highlights the emotional attachment people can develop to a simple object, as the singer exclaims, "Red solo cup, you're more than just plastic/You're more than amazing, you're more than fantastic/Believe me when I'm not the least bit sarcastic/When I look at you and say, 'Red solo cup.../You're my friend.'"
The song is filled with humorous and playful anecdotes about the cup, such as how it is easy to stack but also easy to crack, and how Sharpie markers can be used to write names on it as a means of picking up the opposite sex. The cheerful and upbeat melody complements the lighthearted nature of the lyrics and conveys a sense of communal joy and carefree fun. Overall, "Red Solo Cup" is a tribute to the joys of friendship, camaraderie, and simple pleasures.
