The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Reaching a fever pitch,
It's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go head and sell me out
And I'll lay your ship bare
See how I leave with every piece of you
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And its bring me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it
To the beat
Baby I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it
With a beating
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
We could have had it all
We could have had it all
It all, it all it all,
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
And you played it
To the beat
You could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
And you played
And you played
And you played
And you played it to the beat
The song "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele is about the pain and anger that comes after a breakup. The opening lyrics "There's a fire starting in my heart, Reaching a fever pitch, It's bringing me out the dark" suggest that the singer is ready to confront the pain that they have been feeling since the relationship ended. The chorus "We could have had it all, Rolling in the deep, You had my heart inside of your hand, And you played it to the beat" suggests that the singer feels betrayed by their former lover who they believe played with their emotions.
The second verse "Baby I have no story to be told, But I've heard one of you, And I'm gonna make your head burn" suggests that the singer is aware of something about their former lover that they can use to seek revenge. The lines "The scars of your love remind me of us, They keep me thinking that we almost had it all, The scars of your love they leave me breathless, I can't help feeling, We could have had it all" suggest that the singer is still reeling from the loss of the relationship and the feelings that it brought up.
In general, the song is about the pain that can come after a breakup and the feelings of betrayal that can be felt afterwards. The singer is angry at their former lover and is seeking revenge while still feeling the pain of the loss.

It's getting so intense that it's almost unbearable
It's bringing me out the dark
It's helping me see the truth and the light in my situation
Finally I can see you crystal clear
I now understand you completely and see you for who you truly are
Go head and sell me out
Betray me and reveal my secrets to others
And I'll lay your ship bare
I will expose your lies and deceit to the world
See how I leave with every piece of you
I am taking back all of the love and time I invested in you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
Be warned that I am capable of great things and revenge
The scars of your love remind me of us
The emotional pain you caused me is a constant reminder of our relationship
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
I still believe that our love could have been something great
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
The emotional pain is so intense that it takes my breath away
I can't help feeling
I'm unable to stop feeling this way
We could have had it all
Our love could have been everything we ever dreamed of
Rolling in the deep
Going deep into the emotions and heartache of our relationship
You had my heart inside of your hand
I gave you everything I had and you took it for granted
And you played it
You treated my love as a game and didn't take it seriously
To the beat
You played my heart to the rhythm of your own drum
Baby I have no story to be told
I don't have much to say about myself
But I've heard one of you
I've heard all about you and your deceitful ways
And I'm gonna make your head burn
I'm going to exact revenge and make you suffer for what you did to me
Think of me in the depths of your despair
I want you to suffer and feel as hopeless as I did when we were together
Making a home down there
I want you to feel so hopeless that you never leave that state of despair
As mine sure won't be shared
I won't share my happiness or success with someone who hurt me so much
Throw your soul through every open door
Put your all into every opportunity that comes your way
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Be grateful for what you have and you'll find what you're searching for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
I've turned my pain into something valuable and meaningful
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
You will eventually face the consequences of your actions towards me
We could have had it all
Our love could have been amazing
It all, it all it all,
Everything we wanted and dreamed of
You could have had it all
You could have had my love and everything that came with it
And you played
But you didn't take it seriously
And you played
And you lost it all
And you played
Because you didn't realize its true value
And you played it to the beat
Treating love as a game instead of something that's meaningful and important
