The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town,
Santa Claus is coming to town,
Santa Claus is coming to town,
Puck:
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty or nice
Puck and Samuel's Character:
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town,
Samuel's Character:
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
You better be good for goodness sake!
Finn:
You better be good for goodness sake!
Puck:
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Finn:
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Puck with Finn and Samuel's Character:
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town (Finn:Ho Ho Ho Ho)
Samuel's Character:
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
You better be good for goodness sake!
Finn:
You better be good for goodness sake!
Puck:
You better watch out!
You better not cry
Finn:
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Puck with Finn and Samuel's Character:
Santa Claus is coming to town (Finn: Yeah)
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to
Santa Claus is coming to town
The Glee Cast rendition of the classic Christmas song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" features the voices of Finn, Puck, and Samuel's Character. The song begins with Finn warning listeners to be on their best behavior because Santa Claus is on his way to town, and he's been keeping track of who's been naughty or nice. Puck chimes in, reminding everyone that Santa is making a list and checking it twice to find out who is deserving of presents and who is not. Samuel's Character then sings about how Santa sees you when you're sleeping and knows when you're awake, so you better be good for goodness's sake. The refrain repeats several times throughout the song, with various combinations of the three singers, as they remind everyone to watch out, not cry or pout, and be good for Santa's impending arrival.
The lyrics to "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" communicate the traditional message of Christmas: be kind, be generous, and be good. The song warns that Santa Claus is watching and keeping a record, so we should strive to be the best versions of ourselves. The upbeat melody and repetitive chorus create an infectious, joyful mood that captures the magic and excitement of the holiday season. Overall, the Glee Cast's performance of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is a lighthearted, fun-filled rendition of a beloved classic that reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas.
