The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Madness takes its toll
But listen closely
Quinn: Not for very much longer
Kurt: I've got to keep control
Finn: I remember doin' the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
Finn & Quinn: And the void would be calling
All: Let's do the time warp again...
Let's do the time warp again!
Artie: It's just a jump to the left
All: And then a step to the right
Artie: Put your hands on your hips
All: And bring your knees in tight
And it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insa-a-a-a-ane
Let's do the Time Warp again...
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Quinn: It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me
So you can't see me, no not at all
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intentions
Well-secluded, oh I see all
Kurt: With a bit of a mind flip
Quinn: You're into the time slip
Kurt: And nothing can ever be the same
Quinn: You're spaced out on sensation, ow!
Finn: Like you're under sedation
All: Let's do the Time Warp again...
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Brittany: Well I was walking down the street just a-having a think
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink
Tina: He shook-a me up, he took me by surprise
He had a pickup truck and the devil's eyes
He stared at me and I felt a change
Time meant nothing, never would again
All: Let's do the Time Warp again...
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Artie: It's just a jump to the left
All: And then a step to the right
Artie: Put your hands on your hips
All: And bring your knees in tight
And it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insa-a-a-a-ane
Let's do the Time Warp again...
Let's do the Time Warp again!

Line by Line Meaning
It's astounding, time is fleeting
Time seems miraculous, but it passes quickly
Madness takes its toll
Insanity can make you pay a heavy price
But listen closely
Pay attention to what's happening
Not for very much longer
The current state won't last much longer
I've got to keep control
I need to maintain my composure
I remember doin' the Time Warp
I recall performing the Time Warp dance
Drinking those moments when
Savoring those brief times when life was good
The blackness would hit me
Darkness would engulf me
And the void would be calling
I would feel pulled into an emptiness
Let's do the time warp again... Let's do the time warp again!
Let's relive those enjoyable moments
It's just a jump to the left
Moving slightly to the left
And then a step to the right
Taking a small step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
Place your hands on your hips
And bring your knees in tight
Pull your knees in close to your body
And it's the pelvic thrust That really drives you insa-a-a-a-ane
The pelvic thrust is what makes you go crazy
Let's do the Time Warp again... Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp dance again
It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me
It's an amazing experience, freeing my imagination
So you can't see me, no not at all
I'm hidden from view, invisible
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intentions
In a different world, with a desire to watch others
Well-secluded, oh I see all
Safe in my own space, I can observe everything
With a bit of a mind flip
After some mental gymnastics
You're into the time slip
You're experiencing a tear in time and space
And nothing can ever be the same
Things will never be as they were before
You're spaced out on sensation, ow!
You're lost in a sea of intense feelings
Like you're under sedation
As if you're drugged and oblivious
Well I was walking down the street just a-having a think
I was strolling along, lost in thought
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink
A deceptive man gave me a malicious glance
He shook-a me up, he took me by surprise
He rattled me, surprising me
He had a pickup truck and the devil's eyes
He drove a truck, and his eyes seemed diabolical
He stared at me and I felt a change
His gaze affected me in some way
Time meant nothing, never would again
Time lost its relevance and importance
Let's do the Time Warp again... Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's dance the Time Warp again!
