The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

What, what, what, what
1, 2
1, 2, 3, ow!
Wake up, kids, we got the dreamers' disease
Age 14, we got you down on your knees
So polite, we're busy still saying please
Frenemies, who, when you're down, ain't your friend
Every night we smash that Mercedes-Benz
First we run, and then we laugh till we cry
But when the night is falling
You cannot find the light (Light)
You feel your dreams are dying
Hold tight
You've got the music in you (Don't let go)
You've got the music in you (One dance left)
This world is gonna pull through (Don't give up)
You've got a reason to live (Can't forget)
We only get what we give
I'm comin' home, baby
You're the tops
Give it to me now
Four a.m., we ran the Miracle Mile
We're flat broke, but hey, we do it in style
The bad rich, God's flying in for your trial
Ah...
But when the night is falling
You cannot find a friend (Find a friend)
You feel your tree is breaking, just bend
You've got the music in you (Don't let go)
You've got the music in you (One dance left)
This world is gonna pull through (Don't give up)
You've got a reason to live (Can't forget)
We only get what we give
This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be okay, follow your heart
You're in harm's way, I'm right behind
Now say you're mine
You've got the music in you (Don't let go)
You've got the music in you (One dance left)
This world is gonna pull through (Don't give up)
You've got a reason to live (Can't forget)
We only get what we give (Don't let go)
I feel the music in you
Don't let go
Yeah, yeah, yeah (Don't let go)
Ohh... (Don't give up)
Fly... (Don't let go)
Can't die... (Don't let go)
You only get what you give (Don't give up)
You only get what you give, oh yeah
Health insurance ripoff lying
FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick you down, yeah!
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
Don't give up
You've got the music in you, you've got the music in you
Ooh...
The Glee Cast's song "You Get What You Give" is a motivational tune that encourages people to follow their dreams and not give up. The first verse starts by telling the youth that they have the "dreamers' disease," which indicates that they are hopeful and have immense potential. However, many of them are still "saying please" and waiting for their chance without taking any action. The second verse maintains the same tone by specifying that it is a difficult world, with frenemies who are not supportive, but when in need, willing to hurt. The bridge of the song offers hope, suggesting that everyone has the music inside them, which serves as inspiration to keep going. It tells people to hold on tight because they have a purpose and a reason to live and not give up.

I feel like this is where Glee ended and a new story began. The new story is interesting, it has characters both new and old. But this is the original to me. This just felt like an end and a beginning.
Harper Craven
It’s almost like the creators wanted this to be the final episode of the series but the network still picked it up for additional seasons!
avasdad12
the show was about the glee vlub should of let those members move on and focused on the new team .
Isabella Montiel
yeah I wish they would've made the characters in season 4 more original instead of making them like a mini Puck, mini Finn, and mini Rachel...

For me it's a spin-off from 4 to 6, not the same energy and not the same essence
Eleanor Rillie Reacts
I feel like this is the original and the new seasons after graduation was more like a spin off show.
