BURNING UP
Glee Cast (Feat. Jonathan Groff) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't put me off 'cause I'm on fire
And I can't quench my desire
Don't you know that I'm burning up for your love
You're not convinced that that is enough
I put myself in this position
And I deserve the imposition
But you don't even know I'm alive
And this pounding in my heart just won't die
I'm burning up
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
For your love
You're always closing your door
Well, that only makes me want you more
And day and night I cry for your love
You're not convinced that that is enough
To justify my wanting you
Now tell me what you want me to do
I'm not blind and I know
That you want to want me but you can't let go
Come on, let go
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
For your love
Do you wanna see me down on my knees?
Or bending over backwards now would you be pleased?
Unlike the others I'd do anything
I'm not the same, I have no shame, I'm on fire
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
For your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
I'm burning up, burning up for your love
You know you got me burning up, baby
You know you got me burning up, baby

Overall Meaning

This song, Burning Up by the Glee Cast (Feat. Jonathan Groff), is a powerful declaration of one's desire for someone. The lyrics speak of the intense feelings the singer has for the person they love, despite that person not showing any interest in them. The singer is on fire with passion and desire, and they can't help but express it through their words.

The first few lines of the song reveal the singer's desperation and persistence in pursuing their love interest. They are so consumed by their passion that they can't stop thinking about the person they love, even though that love isn't reciprocated. The lyrics "Don't put me off 'cause I'm on fire" and "I can't quench my desire" reveal the intensity of the singer's feelings. They also plead with the person to believe that their love is enough, "You're not convinced that that is enough."

The second verse reveals the pain and sorrow the singer is going through because of their unrequited love. They cry for the love of the person they desire, but they aren't convinced that their love is enough to justify wanting them. The singer is willing to do anything to win their love, even if it means being humiliated or going against their own dignity. They want to show the person that they are unique and different from others, and that they are willing to take risks to win their love.

Definitely seems like classic vocal adrenaline. As in, super huge production that sounds great but you would imagine vocalists nearly overworking themselves to death to perfect.

VA really was an awesome concept - def more threatening than all the other villains.

Not to mention the ways that it injected a (certain) musical honesty to the narrative that gets lost as the show continued and just fell into the "everyone is a broadway calibre musical talent" logic that only ocassionally was poked fun at or complicated in later seasons. The show makes no bones that VA are musical juggernauts, but it explains that they get that way by recruiting top talent, refusing to let people age our of the group, exhaustively practicing and pouring SHITLOADS of resources into the group. They sound better than everyone because of this - including ND.
