Adiós
Glen Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ran away from home when I was seventeen
To be with you on the California coast
Drinking margaritas all night in the old cantina
Out on the California coast

Don't think that I'm ungrateful
And don't look so morose
Adiós, adiós

We never really made it baby
But we came pretty close
Adiós, adiós

Going up north where the hills are winter green
I got to leave you on the California coast
Going where the water's clear and the air is cleaner
Than the California Coast

Our dreams of endless summers
They were just too grandiose
Adiós, adiós

And I'll miss the blood red sunset
But I'll miss you the most
Adiós, adiós

Adiós, adiós
Adiós, adiós

Overall Meaning

The song Adiós by Glen Campbell tells the story of a young man who left home at the age of seventeen to be with a girl on the California coast. The lyrics indicate that they had some fun and adventurous times together, as they drank margaritas all night in an old cantina. However, as time passed, the young man realizes that their relationship was not meant to last. He acknowledges that they never really made it together as a couple, but they came pretty close. The lyrics "Our dreams of endless summers, They were just too grandiose" indicate that their plans and aspirations were too big and unrealistic.

The young man decides to move on and pursue his dreams elsewhere. He is going up north, where the hills are winter green and the water is clear. He must leave the California coast, but he will miss it, especially the blood red sunset. However, he will miss the girl he left behind the most. The word Adiós is repeated three times to emphasize the finality of their breakup.

Glen now awaits resurrection morning when our Lord returns to raise His children from the graves where they've been sleeping.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.
14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.
15 We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died.
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died[c] will rise from their graves.
17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
18 So encourage each other with these words.

We played this as the curtains were drawn around my dads coffin - he loved Glen Campbell. Everytime I hear his songs it brings a tear to my eye. Mum passed away from Covid19 in February this year and I played a selection of his songs to remind her of dad.

Very sad. My Dad's been dead for 30 years now, and he loved Glen Campbell too. I'll never forget hearing all his records when i was a girl in the 60's. Sorry for your loss.
