Burning Bridges
Glen Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Found some letters
You wrote me this morning
They told of a love we once knew
Now they're gone
I burnt them to ashes
Don't want nothin' to remind me o-of you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to tur-urn back now-ow-ow
Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you some how

Sold the house
We once planned together
Said goodbye
To friends we once knew
Then I moved
To a far away city
Trying hard to forget abou-out you

Burning bridges behind me
It's too late to tur-urn back now-ow-ow

Burning bridges behind me
All I want is to forget you so-ome how

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Glen Campbell's "Burning Bridges" describe a man who is trying to move on from a past relationship. He finds some letters from his former lover in the morning which remind him of the love they once shared. However, instead of keeping the letters to remember her by, he burns them to ashes as he does not want anything to remind him of her. The man then sells the house that he once shared with her and says goodbye to their friends. He then moves to a faraway city to try and forget about her.

The title "Burning Bridges" is a metaphor for the man's desire to completely sever ties with his previous relationship. He not only burns the letters, but also sells their house and says goodbye to their mutual friends. By doing all of these things, he is symbolically burning the bridges that connect him to his past relationship. The man is very determined to move on and forget about his former lover, as shown in his repeated refrain of "all I want is to forget you somehow". Overall, the song portrays the feelings of heartbreak and the struggle to move on after a relationship has ended.
