The Moon
Glen Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See her how she flies
Golden sails across the sky
Close enough to touch
But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold
Once the sun did shine
Lord, it felt so fine
The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pines
And then the darkness fell
And the moon's a harsh mistress
It's so hard to love her well

I fell out of her eyes
I fell out of her heart
I fell down on my face
Yes, I did, and I, I tripped and I missed my star
God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone
And the moon's a harsh mistress
And the sky is made of stone

The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own.

Overall Meaning

In Glen Campbell's song "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress," the moon is personified as a mistress, and the singer describes his experiences with her. He starts by describing how beautiful she is with her golden sails and looks warm like gold. However, he warns that she is a harsh mistress, cold and dangerous if one tries to get too close.

The singer then describes how he fell out of her eyes and heart, losing his way in the darkness. The moon is described as being hard to love well, emphasizing the challenges of trying to have a relationship with something that is so out of reach.

The lyrics suggest that the moon represents a distant, unattainable dream or desire. One can admire her from afar but never fully possess her. The moon's beauty reminds us of the futility of trying to attain something that is unattainable.

I've listened to many deliveries of this song by other well-known artists.  I think Glen comes as close to finding the pain in this song as anyone. A great performance.

Jonathan Schwabe

well-said

Susie Moore

I've never heard this song before. It might be one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. Even more heart wrenching now that Glen is gone. Truly one of the greats, and he'll be so missed.

Susie, look for the instrumental version from "Beyond the Missouri Sky" by Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny. I don't suggest that it surpasses any of Glen's versions...

Susie Moore well said.

Susie -- get the album "Reunion" with Glen singing Jimmy's songs, including this one. It's one of the all-time great albums in any genre. An absolute classic from 1974. Or else get "Reunited," which is even better because it has the complete "Reunion" album plus another 14 Webb songs sung by Campbell. An absolute treasure. Up there with "Sergeant Pepper" and "Pet Sounds" and other landmark albums, although entirely different. Pure perfection.

Glen Campbell and Much Much More

Once again a Campbell/Webb collaboration results in musical magic.

This simply cannot be improved upon. A perfect 10. The voice, the song, the man (still stunning at 65). I rediscovered Glen after his passing last year, and doing so has given me hours of enjoyment. Sure wish I'd seen him in person, especially in his heyday.

Gordon Sellar

I remember meeting Glen in Glasgow post gig. We shared a few drinks he could never understand my Aiberdeen accent but I've always loved the country western vibe

This is one of the most beautiful songs for my soul. I don't have to miss anyone, just the sun sets, I go down the street, I have headphones in my ears, listen to Glen Campbell's love songs, and I love the whole world. Thank you from little Slovakia.
