I won't cry, I won't cry.
Lately I've been thinking I'm not gonna make it here with you, girl.
All the time I'm waisting worrying if you're with someone new, girl.
I'm getting over the pain I feel inside
Even though it hurts me so I know I've gotta let you go,
So baby, please, just let me know.
I won't cry, I won't cry,
I will try and understand why you love another man.
I won't cry, baby, I won't cry,
Tell me what did I say to make you turn and walk away.
All our time together,
I can't seem to shake it from my mind, girl.
Did you mean torever when you shot me down
with your good-bye, girl?
You don't have to worry, I can get along
with or without you around,
Nothing more could bring me down, so baby,
tell me who you found.
I won't cry, I won't cry, . . .
I won't cry, I won't cry, .
I'm getting over the pain I feel inside,
Even though it hurts me so I know I've gotta let you go,
So baby, please, iust let me know.
I won't cry, I won't cry, . . .
I won't cry, I won't cry, . . .
In "I Won't Cry" Glen Goldsmith sings about refusing to shed tears over a lost love. Although understandably pained and feeling hurt, he remains determined to maintain his dignity and composure. He sings about how he has been thinking lately and doubts that he will survive without his lover. He worries that she might be with someone new, leaving him behind to waste time thinking about her. The song is about moving on, being strong, and accepting that what's done is done. He recognizes the pain he feels inside but ultimately decides to let go and move on with or without her. The song captures the complex mix of emotions that come with a break-up, from the pain of rejection to the hope of finding someone new.
The opening lines of the song, "I won't cry, I won't cry, I won't cry for you," sets the tone of the song and establishes the singer's determination to stay strong even in difficult times. The repetition of the phrase reinforces the message of the song.
The song was released in 1988 and climbed to #23 on the UK Singles Chart. It was his biggest hit to date and introduced him as a talented artist to watch.
